Finding Peace in the Face of Chaos

All photos by Mark Addison

One of my really good mates Olivia Symcox has been moaning at me for years now, come shark diving with me? To be honest I had the same reaction as most sane people. Are you crazy?

This is Olivia with as she calls it, HER sharks!

After some long chats about the merits of protecting these amazing animals I started to get more interested in what all the fuss was about. Slowly after seeing pictures of divers i...

According to the Durban papers I was going to be defending my title at the Avon this week. Pity they haven’t been reading this website or they would know I am focusing on my surfski racing and am about to head to the USA. I will be back at the Avon one day, it’s and amazing race.

Ash and Clint training last year!

There were some would class Saffa’s at the race worth a shout out. Clint ‘Lighty’ Pretorius and his Ausi part...

2009-05-14 03:37:41 by Barry Lewin

To continue the legacy of Christo Petzer, Varsity College has set up the Christo Petzer Memorial Bursary Fund.  The fund is aimed at building on the foundation Christo laid in terms of helping underpriviledged scholars with their tertiary education.  His hard work for and dedication towards uplifting young people will live on through an annual Varsity College bursary recipient (or more depending on the donations).

Christo’s  journey at Varsity College started as a UNISA student and then in 2000 he joined the full time staff as Student Advisor-SLB C...

Online coaching - A new age!
2009-03-02 07:54:19 by Barry Lewin

With huge advances in technology in the last while it’s made having an online coach possible. What? An online coach? Yip! I first saw the concept being used about 2 years ago by one of mate, Dan Hugo (www.dghugo.com) who used a website called Training Peaks to upload data from his Garmin so his coach Gary Mandy could view it and analyse his training, adjusting his programme all on Dan’s online log.

It is a great idea and it’s taking off in the paddling world now to!

South Africa at the Olympics
2008-08-25 09:47:22 by Barry Lewin

The last 2 weeks I have tuned into Supersport’s amazing coverage of the Olympics. I am sport mad and even more madly patriotic at the best of times. This sad morning it was all over and nothing to watch so had time to reflect of the pinnacle of world sport.

This is the first games I have actually had friends competing. The South African canoeing team had the strongest showing ever with a huge team qualifying. The girls K4 did extremel...

The Packer
2008-07-17 16:12:22 by Barry Lewin

At the start of the Berg I was standing with my team mate Justin Swart when the dood getting ready for the race at the car next to ours was packing some serious supplies into his boat. Never really though much of it until we returned to the car a solid half hour later to see him still packing stuff into his boat.

Surprised we asked him what he was doing? He said he was a bit scared of the race and was taking some stuff with just in case. Everyone to their own I guess and we had a giggle at him going back to his packing. He was stone last one the first day take more hours tha...

Friends On Fire!
2008-04-24 16:06:20 by Barry Lewin
Over the last couple months I have made many changes to the way I approach my paddling career. This website is just one of the ways I am trying to take my paddling to a different place. The logo on the front page of this site is now used on my kit and I am hoping it will one day become my signature brand.

There are others that have travelled this path before me and have shown me the path forward in many aspects of my career. Max Cluer, Team Jeep’s marketing man has been a great help in seeing the vision and always being there to bounce ideas off.

Being apart of something special, being apart of history! 1st Development paddler to win a ski race!

Earlier in the season I did one of the Kia Motors Marine Surfski series race with one of my development paddlers Sthembiso Mbatha with great success, we ended second in the doubles.

I have watched him grow over the last 3 years into a great paddler. I first taught him how to paddle as part of the Marine lifesaving clubs development programme. I then took over with 4 of the paddlers that showed promise and have coached them ever sin...

Puerto Rico World Cup 2008 race report by Ian Gray
2008-03-07 06:08:44 by Barry Lewin
One of my training buddies Ian Gray recently won the Culebra Challenge. Here is his take on the race!

For some, surfski paddling is about being out in warm tropical water with sunny blue skies, for others it’s about strong winds and hair-raising runs and for some it’s all about the beautiful places that you see with the sport. Combine all three of these and you’ve got surski paddling in Puerto Rico....

2008-03-02 14:03:02 by Barry Lewin

I have just heard news from the Puerto Rico that friend and training partner Ian Gray from Durban RSA has won the 3 star Culebra Challenge from US Olympic legend Greg Barton.

Ian is still new to surfski paddling but in the last year has quit work to travel the world to surfski races to gain experience at an international level. He has had some great results with 11th at the USA surfski Champs and 4th at the Mayors cup.
