The most fun event of the year for me has to be SA K4 champs at Shongweni Dam. The family vibe and the awesome location give it something special, not to mention how much fun racing K4 really is.
This year was a little disjointed with just getting back from Spain and a number of my club mates at Kingfisher just having got home from the Avon Decent (Ausi). We have quite a strong club and have 3 teams so picking the A, B and C boat would be hard with s...

Was a little disappointing sitting on the bank yesterday. I couldn’t find a partner for the K2 race at Busto’s club. Trekking over the mountain to take photos is not my style.
The trek today was with more purpose to race the Candas International K4. The K4 race is traditionally in Ribadesella but this year it was the 50th anniversary of the local club in Candas so they moved it there.
The trick with this all is there is no fresh water in Candas. There is a small craft harbour and the sea. Well we race sprint K4’s in the sea today. Haha. It m...

I was told that the start would be crazy. I believed them after watching you-tube clips of the race. The masses of competitor and spectators is something I have been to see and be a part of for some time.
Well every story can’t live up to being there in real life.
The morning started with a very quiet and nervous breakfast in the hotel. We could hear the people in the streets going mad. They hadn’t stopped since the night before w...

Anthony Grote (www.anthonygrote.com) kindly send me these photo's of Justin and I in what little water there was. Dont let these photos fool you, it was super low.

We bumped and bashed rocks down the Omko over the weekend. What a nightmare compared to the raging rapids everyone is used to. My fat wide boat even moved some rocks in that river. There were some high's though. The overnight camp was cool and shooting 5-6 rapids a...

I popped a seat pin 20m into the race and had to stop on the first bend to sort the problem out and only really got going some 15min later. So frustrating. I haven’t been able to race any of the Marine Series race being the organiser so this is the first time I have had a chance to race and see how the training is going. Not to be, that’s river racing for you.

The weekend in the berg was all time. I have to give it to the Drak, they put on ...

| Drak - Will there be water? |

Water Water Water is the talk of the twitter and facebook this Friday morning.
This weekend is the SA K1 champs on the Drak Challenege. A race I haven's done in years but think I picked the year to do it again. The Drak is a moody river. The level can change within hours and be a very different animal at high and low levels.
At a low level it is a rock field. Very technical lines and a small mans paradise where the big boys get killed in scraping over rocks. When it's full it is a roller coaster ride of white water. Quite a contrast. If there is rain the river can come up wi...

I have done many races all over the world but one seems to stand out every year. The Fish River Canoe Marathon just cannot be missed. With a little shoulder admin I haven’t been able to train properly the last couple weeks so elected not to race. I took on the new K3 category socially with two mates from Cape Town in Justin Swart and Marcel Bosson.

In Novermber last year I spent a couple weeks training with the national sprint squad on training camp. Was a treat leaning from them and hanging out with some amazing people. Well the sprinters have been dominating the World Cup's this year. I just got this story from their latest success. Well done!

Saw an amazing physical feet today. Ant Stott lived up to his nick name of Superman today in the second leg of the Duzi canoe marathon paddling his way from 4 min down to a massive 13min lead. Hectic!
Had a classic ride on my mtb over Numeni hill and along the second half of the course to Inanda Dam seconding along the way. Only one more day of Duzi fever left as the 1400 strong field head into Durban tomorrow. ...

Housemate Ant Stott on Pinetree portage running like a machine!
The whole of KZN gets run over this week by Duzi fever and I can’t help getting involved in some way, so much tradition that got me hooked on paddling from the start.
My first Duzi was a mare, 21h, broke the boat on day 1 and 2, limped home with a major spirit of adventure. The competitive nature of my paddling only surfaced later but the seed was s...

Day 1
The Croc is a very narrow and technical river with a weir some 20m after the start. It’s impossible to send batches off so the start format is one of a time trail. I got a good seeding starting 3rd. Had a good start shooting the first 2 weirs fine. Caught the dood that started in 2nd about a min in front of me and passed him to get some open water. Unfortunately at the 10km weir I bent my rudder and it kept getting stuck up when I went through rapids. Well 2 stops to straighten it later I shot the notorious no 14 rapid without swimming, fini...

My word am I excited today. There is a buzz inn the air and I am 1000km from our base for the next 5 days in Cradock.
The eastern cape comes alive this week with the pilgrimage of thousands of paddlers to the Fish Canoe Marathon. The town of Cradock and its amazingly welcoming farming community gets overrun for a week of the best river paddling in the country. By far my favourite race on the...

The weekend was packed with some cool racing. The last couple years I haven’t done much on the local calendar over this period of the yea so have missed out on some cool races. The y have been especially fun the K2 with certainly hasn’t come out the racks in some time.
First came the KZN K2 flat water at Blue Lagoon hosted by my own club, Kingfisher! Paddling with my fish partner Wayne Wilson we hoped to work on our combo over the weekends ...

For me one of the best events on the South African calendar is the SA K4 champs. The racing is always tight and technical. Amazing to watch 4 people paddling in unison. Even better feeling when done right.
For the last 4 years I have taken care of the Kingfisher K4. The club invested some money in a new boat and leaving the thing around would not be good for its longevity. I am normally in the boat and have some pa...

With the banks of the flooded Avon River packed to the brim with 900 boats of all shapes and sizes. Day 3 was a bit of a mess up, we missed our change over points and I didn’t get a paddle in. Did 2 sections the day before so not a train smash and the team would certainly have me doing the longest section of the last day. Not complaining to much after some awesome red wine with out hosts the previous night.
Day 4 came After a great night at an amazing spot called Duns Castle. Hank and Pipa told us about it so we changed our booking...

Driving to the start this morning for our second day on the Berg the distance mountain caps were solidly covered in snow and thermometer in the car measured a massive 3 degrees. One would normally be scared of climbing on the water in conditions like this but (always has to be a decent but in every story) the mood was upbeat as the sun was starting to come out. It had rained non stop the last two days here in Paarl so some sun was a massive improvement. <...

I have heard war stories around the fire about Berg for many years and it was great standing at the start and truly grasp what people were saying. The races is steeped in tradition with only the most hard core paddlers taking on this amazing challenge.
With 3 team members my paddle would be a fraction of those who did the whole thing. The seriously easy option if there ever was one. Our first member up Luke Stowman (15year old lighty from Paarl) had a great section letting me off in like 80th. I had to paddle 22km to the next stop for Justin Swart to do the last l...

I am in Cape Town for the Isuzu Berg River Canoe Marathon in a relay team for Rudy Project. Flew into a freezing Cape Town this morning to a bumpy landing and rainy weather. Nice by chance meeting some mates on the plain for a Charlie chat on the way down.
Spend the day hanging out with Justin Swart, my team mate and host for the trip. We went to watch and second for another paddler Jamie Hamlin who had to do a time trail to determine his seeding. We didn’t have to paddle as the relay team’s start at the back of the pack so we don’t inter fear with the...

| Duzi Day 3 - My best! |

Finally the race gets to the section of river I absolutely love. In years gone by I think I paddled duzi just to get to the last day and the awesome white water going around Burma Road.
Well after two amazing days on the river it was the finishing stretch of 35km into Durban to pick up the elusive medal representing the trek from Mariztberg to Durban that most in natal thrive to do at least once in their lives.
The day starts with a 5km flat stretch in Inanda dam before a short hop over the dam wall down the river to me...

Water Water and more Water!
Today’s second day of the Duzi river canoe marathon was great fun in the full river between Duzi Bridge and Inanda dam. Justin and I had a much faster day than yesterday coming home in 3h40 min in 168th place, a good 87 places up on yesterday.
Our sudden rise in positions was a result of us simply not getting out the boat. There are many places on the 45km stretch of river that most people would consider staying in the river. The first is at Ibis Point where there are normally peop...

The focus for the last 6 months or so has been pretty intense racing and although it is fun one needs a change mow and again. So off down the Duzi river canoe marathon for a change of scenery.
I was originally going to paddle with my best mate Rus but unfortunately the race didn’t accept our entry so had a boat and no partner. Luckily I got a ring from Justin Swart (ex springbok rugby player) looking for a partner. Bonus!
Justin is currently living in Stellenbosch outside Cape Town so we didn’t get much time in th...

I arrived in Dublin on Thursday and was lucky to hook up with fellow South Africans Herman Chalupsky and Dave Reese who had offered me a couch to sleep on for my 4 day stay in Dublin. It was an awesome site to see a car drive through the airport with 2 surfski's on the roof as it made me feel almost at home for a second. They were social paddlers racing a k3 with Stephen Froesea local laddy who would be out tour guild for our stay.
