Race of Champions - Portimao - 2nd
2010-09-06 12:56:52 by Barry Lewin

After a long and hot trip down to Portimao from Porto with plenty admin the last thing I felt like doing was training. Eish! I did know however that I needed to find some consistency this week after some lightly disappointing results the week before.

With tired eyes I headed out on the morning run on Tuesday to put a stamp of determination to the week which in the end paid off.

Strung together some decent sessions including a 25km ...

Nelo Summer Challenge - Sprint Races
2010-08-29 15:50:46 by Barry Lewin

The second day of racing consisted of a round robin knock out sprint event just like a lifesaving carnival. Nelo supplied all the spec skis for the 600m shootout.

The best sprinter in the world are here so didn’t really expect anything from this race. Top end speed is not my thing (I am kak in this type of company).

The start would be vital to get position and with the speed of the 200m boys that meddled last weekend at worlds this was going to be a mission. They start was a run to your boat on the water’s edge, grab it and hit the ...

Nelo Summer Challenge - Downwind

Had a real mare today. Finished 6th. So tempted not to blog the bad stuff but how real is that. Don’t want to be that dood that moans ether.

Warming up - Pic - Jasper Mocke

Nelo put on one hell of a show today with a sick event. The wind came through at the right time for the field. Glad it did more for the race organisers who had put in so much effort than for us who have really enjoyed our stay here in Portugal so far.

Plett Easter Surfski Challenge - 7th
2010-04-07 12:40:21 by Barry Lewin

On Friday afternoon I hit the drive down to Plett for the second race of the weekend. I was so stoked to find OFF THE HOEK open. I restaurant owned by a close mate open for a decent graze before crashing really hard. Lucky the race in Plett only starts at 2pm so some extra recovery did some good on the coach.

Conditions were way calmer than previous years and the lookout mouth was not out to bite you on the ass on each lap. The course was exciting like normal with 5 laps of the bay including upwind, downwind, cross wind and waves in the mouth all in one.

Nelson Mandela Bay Surfski Classic - 6th
2010-04-07 12:37:14 by Barry Lewin

I am finally home after the Easter weekend of surfski madness in the Easter Cape.

I was so disappointed and down after the race on Friday. With the waves not breaking my way last week at lifesaving national, they broke against me this week even more.

I had a consistent week with the Easter Cape training squad lead by Michele Eray and was seeing some progress. Finally!

I had and OK start and settled into the bunch. Grant Van De Walt came past quite quickly and a moved across to latch on and he pulled me through...

Winkle Toti Winkle - Back to why I paddle
2009-12-19 14:39:34 by Barry Lewin

Tuesday lying on my couch in the heart of beer and ice cream season (rest), I checked the weather to see the SW was going to blow for the Winkle Toti Winkle the next day and that the course would be changed to a downwind.

Mmmmmm, temping. I am meant to be on a break but couldn’t resist the wind calling. Not to race, not for anything else but to be out in the sea in some proper south coast runs.
Headed down the coast to stay at a second home of mine, hooked up a table tennis compo that evening with the team...

Southern Shamaal in my words!
2009-12-19 14:20:33 by Barry Lewin

It’s been a chaotic week back in Durban of catching up with mates and family so this blog is a little over due. It has given me some to reflect on the huge high.

Big shoes to fill?
The history of this event is just immense from the original challenge of Johnny Woods racing John Ball from PE-EL to my dad’s record on the sunshine coast. I have been hearing stories of the race from before I could walk. Now with no experience on the course named as national team captain was quite a surprise and a m...

Dubai Shamaal Experience - Race report 09
2009-12-03 06:39:02 by Barry Lewin

The proving ground. I believe that Dubai is the strongest field in any race in the world right now. Yes it has the money as the richest race in the world to draw the paddlers in but for me the whole vibe on the race is all about getting the chance to race against the best in the world. To me, this is the ultimate challenge.

I got to Dubai a week before the race which is way early after a decent tour to Hong Kong. Not sure if being that early is wise but my base at the Randall’s which has become my Dubai base over the last 4 years they have hosted...

Dragon Run - Race Report
2009-11-21 22:12:48 by Barry Lewin

Early morning wakeup call with some lingering jetlag wasn’t fun but as soon as the trucks arrived to transport our ski’s to the start the vibe changed to that of excitement and nerves. Game face time only to get off the bus and get hit by freezing 10 degree Temperatures!

Never really had warm kit so through on what I had (not much) and jumped onto the water for a warm up hoping by moving I would warm up the body. Kind of worked. Wind was really blowing hard through the little bay at the start line and most of the 140 strong field were seeking shelter under the cliffs o...

Just finished with the race registration briefing and all the boys are here.

The first section from the start on the main land will to the 9 pins will be side on and very bumpy. There are little islands everywhere with huge a...

National Surfski Trial - East London
2009-11-09 02:59:00 by Barry Lewin

Flat and hot conditions greeted the paddlers this morning on Nahoon beach in East London at national trials. The 31km paddled to Kids beach was going to be tough with a strong field and min wind.

I had a good start and flowed Tom Schilperoort through the notorious Nahoon reef with a large bunch just behind us. The bunch behind us ducked in on a shallow line down the coast but Tom and I stayed a little wider round the harbour wall section. The bumps were going in the right directions and there were some runs on the top of the swell. The odd run was...

I am sticking around in Cape Town for a couple days to do some training and hit a luck by connecting with friend and Cape paddling legend Dawid Mocke (current world number 2) for a training session.

The idea was to try get in some long training in for the Molokai race in May so long, long, long it would be. We headed out from Fish Hoek to paddle to Cape Point and back. I have paddled that section of coast before on the Cape Point challenge many years ago but have never gone there and back.

Pennypinchers Easter Surfski Race - Plett
2008-02-25 09:04:46 by Barry Lewin

I have a massive soft spot for the Eastern Cape and have enjoyed 2 trips down that section of the coast recently. I had a great trip the the Hansa Knysna Sedgefield and the Investec St Francis Surfski races. The coast is just so majestic and the people are so welcoming you think you are in paradise.

I have made some awesome mates from down there and in talking to one of them I heard the paddling club in Plett would be putting on a race on the 22nd of March with some prize money, well I dug a little deeper and WOW!

The p...

Kia Motors Marine surfski series race 2 - First Win of the Series!
2008-01-26 13:20:32 by Barry Lewin
The marine series was back on tonight with its 2nd race after a break last week for the Duzi canoe marathon. The conditions were also back to normal after massive surf kept the field very honest 2 weeks go.

I had a great start and had 2 boat lengths lead at the first can. These marine races are really short, 8km exact (on my Garmin 305 GPS system) so it’s possible to stay away if you get a small gap. I hit it on the gas heading down to the second buy off North Beach. The new Yellow buys the marine used for the first time this week work...

Kia Motors Marine surfski series race 1 - What a way to start the year!
2008-01-12 14:08:46 by Barry Lewin
The marine series in known as the easiest launch in Durban and the short 8km perfect for new people to getting into the sport. Well Friday evening produced non of the calm easy stuff and rather mother nature decided to show everyone who is boss. The east really blew hard on Thursday bringing the good well from earlier in the week into the bay and by Friday the surf was not small to say the least. It was massive!

It’s that time of year again to dust off the skis from their Xmas break to take on the funnest series on the calendar. The races are run from the marine lifesaving club at addington beach with is the best launch in Durban.
The races start at 530pm on 10 Fri evenings. The course consists of a 2 lapper totalling 8km staying close to shore for safety. Nice and short! What a great way to start the weekend, head down to the beach after work and smash out a paddle in the warm Durban water, have a couple of cold Hansa’s with your mates and share some war stories i...

Investec Sporty Anderson Surfski Race, St Francis
2008-01-02 12:24:09 by Barry Lewin
I drove 12 hours to the beautiful town of St Francis yesterday to take part in the Investec Sporty Anderson surfski race.

Well it was so worth the drive. I arrived late yesterday and met up with Chopper (Richard Von Wilderman) for a surf at Seals point and it lived up to its expectations. Every surfer needs to surf seals at least once. I grew up watching the famous surfing film Endless Summer 2 where Wingnut and Pat walk over the dunes to see the point in all its glory so finally coming to surf here was special. The surf was average but it was ...

Winkle Toti Winkle
2008-01-02 11:51:13 by Barry Lewin

After a great week back home in the land of the living and well fuelled with my mothers amazing chow I headed down the south coast for the annual Winkle Toti Winkle surfski race.

I am lead to believe the race is the 3rd oldest in the world and has been a happy hunting ground for me in the past. I have won this race 5 times in a row from when I was a junior. I unfortunately missed the race last year with my dad keeping the trophy in the family by winning it my absence. Go Bullet!

I really like the people dow...

Just got off the water in Perth after the crossing from Rottnest Island to Sorrento beach. Luckily our spot is just across from the finish and I have popped in for a shower, off to prize giving in a minute!

The race was the fastest downwind I have ever seen, the top doods all out prove a point....

Dolphin Coast challenge
2007-12-22 09:41:16 by Barry Lewin
I wasn't planning on paddling the dolphin coast but two days before the race Hank McGregor gave me a ring asking me to fill the back seat of his boat. I couldn't say no to the challenge of the strong field and good predicted winds. We had boat admin on day 1 with a broken rudder filling us up with water loosing a lead to finish 3rd, day 2 didn’t go any better but managed to hold onto out position for the bronze in the national doubles champs! The wind blew on both days making racing fast, making it two days of perfect training for the last run of races before the end of th...

Cape Town - Brian's Kayaks/Mellerware grading race
2007-12-22 09:39:53 by Barry Lewin
I flew down on Friday to do the first race of the Surfski Series, the conditions were flat with a strong field including 6 guys who travelled down from Durban for the race. It is great to see the guys committed and willing to travel to races around the country and what a better race to travel to than the Granger Bay to Barkers and back. I went well in the first half getting to the turn with the bunch but lacked power on the way home, Hank Mc Gregor won in an amazing time of 58min40sec beating my record set 2 years ago. Bummed that he now has his name on the course...

USA Surfski Champs - Day 1 Singles
2007-12-21 13:27:45 by Barry Lewin
Day 1
Race day was upon us, Ian and I ready to rumble, I didn't start to well and battled in the first half hour of the race ending up missing the pack, the start was just so hectic fast and the first section into the current really technical, i chose bad lines in the current only turning at Point Bonita in 8Th, not great at all, slowly the body and the training kicked in the rougher water past Point Bonita and i started to catch up, hauling in 1 at a time, Zolt 1...
