SA National Lifesaving Camps - Blue Water Bay
2010-03-31 16:36:06 by Barry Lewin

It’s taken me 3 days of pondering over the happenings over last week’s nationals to sit down and write this blog. Such a contrast of positive and negative coming out of the champs I really don’t know where to start.

Lifesaving is in trouble. It is so badly run. Let’s leave it there. I don’t want to one of those doods who just bad mouths things. The problem is people now days are exposed to professionally run events that their (and my) perspectives have changed and we expect so much more.

There are so many positives on the other h...

4 Nations Lifesaving International
2009-03-30 06:54:36 by Barry Lewin

With intrusions from Julia my amazing physio to rest my shoulder and Surfskischool classes being cancelled due to a buster SW I had the weekend kind of off to go watch the 4 Nations at Pirate.

What a show! The Ausi’s dominated as expected but the racing was intense. We haven’t had an international since 2000 so great for the sport and great to watch, had a ball. Got to hang out with some mates from the USA I stay with on my tours through California.

Hope I can start paddling soon as I am super inspired now after watching the weekend...

Day 1 – Taplin Win!

Lifesaving champs always pops up out of nowhere every year and before you know it you on the line with very little time in the Spec ski. No different this year. Paddled my Titan (www.customkayaks.co.za) for the first time yesterday since Natal Champs. Caught some waves and did a couple starts. Please don’t take my prep as the norm or the way to do thing, life just takes over sometimes.

Only had one event today, the Taplin. Basically 1 swimm...

Blast from the past - Wayne Lifesaving Videos
2009-03-16 06:38:24 by Barry Lewin

A fitting time to put this up with SA Lifesaving this week. One of our Marine Surf Lifesaving Club Members, Wayne Ashford, and good friend to me in recent times has recently found some classic old lifesaving footage for way back in the day. He has spent some long hours converting its format and cutting it into workable videos. Well is hard work has paid off and he has just uploaded it all up onto youtube.

This is where it all started for me as a nipper, watching the legends of the time taking on mountainous surf with grace and humility. I grew up at Marine and am really proud of its...

Natal Lifesaving Champs
2009-01-25 11:08:55 by Barry Lewin

Short, sharp and fun racing. Natal champs was over the weekend at Pirates which meant surf, even on a small day. I only do the ski races which makes it an easy weeks racing compared to most doing champs.

Had a good couple warm ups Saturday afternoon with the ski relay and a ski heat. Lead them both and felt great considering I have had a 6 week break from training.

Sunday was the ski final. Had a good start in a quality field. Got away with Hank McGregor and held him to the can and ran run for run coming home. Got really outdone in ...

SA Lifesaving Champs 08 - Blouberg - Silver and Bronze
2008-03-16 14:41:12 by Barry Lewin
The last 3 day has blown past with hectic wind in Blouberg (Cape Town) for the national lifesaving champs. The conditions weren’t great with cold water and side chop but that didn’t deter the racing.

I have to say it was one of the most competitive champs I have been to with the big boy...

It was a mad rush getting to lifesaving on time after my coaching on Saturday morning but luckily they started the programme with board races first which took the pressure off a bit.
