A Journey
2013-03-07 13:21:50 by Barry Lewin

I haven’t done a personal post for some time, obviously the last 2 months have been dominated but the Varsity College Marine Surfski Series and some pre season training but thought I would share a milestone.

Just a couple years ago I was a green student at Varsity College using my paddling to see the world. With adding little elements of business into my life in my own time I have enjoyed the process of turning my passion for paddling into a business....

Highs of 2011 in Photos

The Varsity College Marine surfski Series was amazing. To see something I run grow makes the hard work all worth it. I also races this year with Shtmebiso Mbatha.

My best Lifesaving Champs ever. Picked up a gold in the double (with Mark Mulder) and bronze in the single at SA Lifesaving Champs in Camps Bay. Racing for the best club in the country, Marine, managed a couple more in team events. Who said Cape Town or Camps Bay was flat? Will be rememb...

That Scratchy Feeling - My Greatest Fear
2011-12-20 02:46:45 by Barry Lewin

Monday and the wind down for Cape Point has started. The last couple weeks have been good training with solid session every afternoon in a Durban training group with some solid long session on the weekends. It is funny how the less I race the better my body reacts to training and the consistency of training without distraction. Things were kicking nicely.

Morning paddle in a light west off Marine (trying to get used to the early start at Cape Point) to start the day fo...

Summer Update
2011-12-14 05:50:06 by Barry Lewin

It’s been some 3 weeks since I posted a blog. Asking myself what have I been doing? Poking my head out the chaos to see what else is happening has been rare but the focus has been good.

Training has been great. Have been logging some nice longer paddles in prep for the Cape Point Challenge and with little racing on the KZN surfski calendar right now, not racing each weekend has given me a change to put in some good time in the seat of my Bull...

Limbo
2011-07-26 04:08:21 by Barry Lewin

It’s been the longest break between blogs I can remember for some time. I have not fallen off the earth, more of the opposite. Raging hard on the training front with a fresh approach and pushing on with other business projects.

I really have been battling to find any consistency in training after picking up some flu in Mauritius and a nasty tummy bug last weekend. The stop start training is so disheartening when the mind is trying to push the body and getting no return. I really thrive on consistency so the last couple weeks have been hard. There are positives. I started train...

Who is your coach? Give them a high 5

Got mailed this article from Tim Noaks. He needs no intro. I have lots of coaches and I am going to give them all a high 5 today for their influence and guidence. A must read!

JUST CALL ME COACH by TIM NOAKS

The highest calling in life is to be a great coach. The most influential people in my life – my wife, my parents, those who taught me sports and my profession – are my heroes and my role models. But, more importantly, they have coached me in the art of life.
We tend to think...

Niggles and Frustrations vs Patience
2011-06-07 06:29:55 by Barry Lewin

Patience is not one of my strong points but after the last week I think I am starting to master the art is some small way.

I had a bad race at the 5 beaches last weekend. Back was sore and body just hating me. The lack of physio on some big weeks training took its toll. Had developed a niggle under my right shoulder blade the just seized my back and shoulder up.

Some TLC and some rest (where the patience come in) the progress was slow, very slow. Battling to sleep with pain, my mind playing tricks, I wasn’t a happy chap.

Durban Turns on Fire and Opens My Eyes

Once in a while you need to pick you head out the sand and realise what’s right in front of your nose.

Not like I don’t appreciate Durban or my life but one needs to celebrate once in a while the things we take for granted.

The last week Durban has produced some of the best surf of the year and boy did I celebrate it by making the most of what I have on my doorstep. The novelty of surfing in board shorts in wint...

The Good Stuff
2011-01-03 04:37:15 by Barry Lewin

I always take a break over this time of year to recharge the batteries. The end of 2010 was no different with a couple weeks of very little paddling.

Not sure why but this year’s break was sweeter than I can remember. Maybe it is still fresh and the good vibes are still ringing in my ears. Maybe it’s having someone to share it with (new girlfriend has me excited) or that I appreciate the time with family and friends now with perspective. No matter the measure, it has been flippen unreal.

I have surfed HARD. Surfing being a favourite...

Negative Blogging and Finding the Stoke
2010-12-07 06:46:16 by Barry Lewin

I got chirped quite hard from some of my readers about how negative my blog on the Dubai Shamaal was. I really appreciate your feedback and keep it coming.

I believe a blog is a personal account and I can really be anything as long as it is honest. Well I was down after the race and therefore my blog a bit negative. I am ok with that. There are many sacrifices made in the road leading into such a race and for it to not go well is hard. Hence the mood.

I am not a negative person and the mood certainly doesn’t last long. It is very easy for...

Burning the candle at both ends
2010-11-23 03:32:43 by Barry Lewin

The last week has been manic. Have finalised most of the sponsors and logistics on the Varsity College Marine Surfski Series for 2011 and trying to train hard for Dubai coming up. Leave in exactly a week.

Woke up yesterday with a cough. Not ideal. Being sick is my greatest fear so in true terror rushed off to the doc. He laughed at me and told me to get more sleep, stop working so hard and chill. No more burning the candle at both ends. All expected.

I told him back “I got a life” haha. Think he understood.

Travelling is sometime stressful, always tiring and not as glamorous as it comes across. I tell my mates often that sometimes it would be great to just stay home a settle a little.

The 'Life" Achievement Award
2010-07-30 03:12:29 by Barry Lewin

It’s been two weeks since my last race and blog. It has me a chance to reflect on the winter season. Loved every second of it and almost feel like I am enjoying it even more than when I started (if that is possible).

I think the break on C2C4C did my motivation and perspective wanders. Realising the sport is more about doing what you love than anything else. There is always pressure to perform but if we break it down, winning a battle (a race to me) in not winning the war (life). Winning at life is way more important!

One stand out this year has been my...

Surf Fever - Finding Balance
2010-06-03 09:24:31 by Barry Lewin

If you have been following my twitter feed you will have noticed I have been sneaking in some surfing sessions in between my paddling training. There is a purpose for this. It may not be performance based but one of balance.

I set a number of goals at the beginning of the year which included getting into some event management, charity work with C2C4C and achieving an element of personal balance between work, racing and play.

The year to date has gone really well with the eventing and charity but that elusive balance I was aiming for has fallen by the way side...

My secret weapon celebrates her birthday!
2008-10-28 08:56:17 by Barry Lewin

I am really and proud to be part of a close family. Basically I am a total and utter mother’s boy. Nothing wrong with that! For years my mum has been my secret weapon feeding me, driving me to races and always there to give me a decent clap if I step out of line. Dynamite comes in small packages for shore. Well is time to celebrate my mum’s birthday. Hope you have a classic day mum.

Curry Cup Final - Durban lives large!
2008-10-26 16:07:38 by Barry Lewin

It’s very hard to explain the vibe at a rugby game in Durban. The atmosphere at Kings Park is world renowned. It is simply electrifying.

This weekend it was as good as it’s ever been. The Sharks hosted the Bull Bulls for the curry cup final. In my back yard there was no way in the world I would miss it. Luckily my uncle wasn’t using his tickets and I picked them up. Thanks Uncle Peter!

The game was tight but the Sharks came out on top! Wahoo, finally after close misses in the curry cup and super 14 last year. I was lucky enoug...

Nelspruit - Croc River
2008-10-16 04:55:16 by Barry Lewin

Well its Thursday and the first time I have been able to get on my laptop this week. I am in the Croc Valley just outside Nelspruit for the week. What may you ask is a surfski paddler doing 750 km from salt water? Well I got in invite from housemate Ant Stott to travel up the Crock river marathon with him and spend the week up here training.

When the world champ says come train I listen! It’s a great opportunity to learn somethi...

Varsity College Team for the Fish River Marathon

One of my amazing sponsors Varsity College are putting together a team to head down to the fish and have got me involved rallying the troops. We had a team meeting in Pmb with the squad to get all our entries sorted and hand out our racing kit. Fish doubles as the national intervarsity race so all the universities put together team to take part. Varsity Co...

Le Troquet - Pure Decadence!
2008-09-06 15:27:11 by Barry Lewin

New friends Kymmie and Bianca who have been staying at the digs the last week or so with house mate Hev unfortunately had to say goodbye to Peace Cottage on Friday. Hev wanted to celebrate their time with us and show off her parent’s restaurant that we have heard tons about.

Hev’s parents have been to the digs on a number of occasions and I was dying to check out the hype. Gilbert and Annick Bordier have run their restaurant, LE TROQUET in its current location at the Village Market in Westville for the last 4 years and before that for the last 25years in the Westvi...

Inspiration
2008-09-05 16:11:27 by Barry Lewin

People find there inspiration in totally different places. What makes you tick, gives you a chill down your spine or gets you amped like never before?

For most it’s the slightest thing, like a catchy tune or a smile from a friend can change their mood instantly. I have been trying to pick up on the things that give me butterflies in my tummy and give me the little lift I need to get through the next interval in training or through the last email in the inbox.

Team Boat Pondering
2008-09-02 17:52:58 by Barry Lewin

Coming out the bottom of Cradock Wier in the last K2 Fish with Partner Jeff Smith!

The plan for this year has been very different to that of last year. In order to make the best possible run into Dubai I have chosen not to head to too many of the international events on the calendar like the US surfski champs. Instead I am going to be racing more of the local season here in SA. The cost of travelling is massive and at the moment I have to pick my trips and m...

Best of both worlds/best of all worlds to me!
2008-08-17 17:18:15 by Barry Lewin

It’s Saturday evening, dark and very silent as I sit on the deck in front of my 5 start tent in the Shongweni Msinsi reserve. The frogs on the waters edge the only sounds in the night. Why would you ask am I sitting in the dark on a Saturday night?

Don’t think I could have asked for a better day. Wind was blowing SW so hit a short downwind with Billy and Tracy Harker. What a jol, so good being back in the sea where I belong. It’s my freedom and liberation, makes the blood pump and goose bumps rage. Picked mate and multisport legend Dan Hugo from the airport...

Home sweet home!
2008-08-12 02:01:46 by Barry Lewin

Woke this morning to the sweet sound of birds chirping outside my window and the drone on the surf through the trees in front of the digs after some 18 hours worth of traveling yesterday. The beauty of Durban always gives me a classic wake up call every time I get home form a trip. Glad to be back even if it means catching up the work I have missed over the last 2 weeks.

Nice surprise on my arrival was that my housemate Warwick had built a deck and put in a bar in front of the digs, Party Time! Hehe. Warwick has his own decking company called Big Decks that does some amazing stuff...

Sydney

Sitting in the airport waiting for my connecting flight to Perth, West Australia. I am on my way to the Avon Decent this weekend. Always excited to head out on a new adventure. Travelling has become a way of life for me and my paddling has seen many parts of the world over the last 3-4 years.

No complaining, I am flippen lucky.

PE, Jeffrey's
2008-07-17 16:13:58 by Barry Lewin

Just got home to a warm Durban after 3 days in PE. Went to train with my doubles partner for this weekends SA double ski champs. My dad wrote an awesome article last year after the Dolphin Coast Challenge last year that really hit home for me. Basically saying what the results for that weekend produced, the doubles teams that knew each other well were first and second. Keeping it in the family Dawid and Jasper Mocke won with the Bartho Brothers second. It shouted, Do your homework when you have to race doubles. Well trying to learn from this and headed to PE to get used to the double. ...

‘The greatest shoal on earth’ is one of the many names I have heard the Sardine Run getting called this week. Well I agree, certainly one amazing site. Was lucky enough to check out the small fish beaching on the south coast this morning.

After a big 2 weeks the body was calling for an easier week. Trying to listen to the body as best I can so been backing off this week. Not always that easy when all you want to do is kick down. The weekend has flown by in a haze of jetlag from some hectic flights home. After two days of flying I got home late Friday night and was thrown in the deep end with Surfskischool the next morning.

The weather was top notch and was great to hear some stories of how the racing was going. Managed to get through Saturday on a high of being home, started to crash and was late for good mate Andy’s 21st. Did don the fancy dress (theme was tight and bright) which was really fun. Thanks to Robyn for the tights!

Arrived in Hawaii

I landed last night on the Island of Oahu to be greeted by good mates Steve Woods and Ian Grey. What an awesome sight to see two familiar faces after 36hours of flying.

The trip went ok; I missed a connection in Atlanta which cost me about six hours. It wasn’t a train smash as it gave me a chance to have a decent meal and recharge. It did mean I arrived last night in the dark and I haven’t had a chance to see the Island yet.

A local friend has put some of the overseas boys up here and given us an amazing spot...

Last 3 days leading into the massive flights to Hawaii
2008-05-03 11:48:01 by Barry Lewin
I am sitting typing in a corner of the Joberg airport where I could find a plug to charge my laptop. I have had the last hour’s flight and waiting in lines to contemplate the last 3 days. I have been meaning to blog about the emotions of a dream trip like this coming true but never got near the key board.

I woke on Thursday to a light SW rustling the tree’s outside the digs. This was what I was waiting for the last week, some wind. I didn’t hesitate calling in my mom (you are a legend my most awesome mother) to drive me down the coast for ...

There is still a lot to do before I leave for on the 3 week trip to the islands. Sponsors stickers, racing kit, paddles, put pads, drinking systems, Garmin’s, Usn racing juice, sun screen have all been packed 2 weeks early. I...

I awoke this morning to a chill in the air as I pushed snooze on the phone alarm to cuddle under the blankets for an extra 5min of sleep. Perfect sleeping in weather. The first winter cold front had hit bringing with some nasty rain and SW wind.

When I eventually crawled out of bed the 10m to the coach, opened my laptop to check how strong the wind was going to blow and tucked up under another blanket.

The wrong way round!
2008-04-18 09:07:06 by Barry Lewin
I have had a week that seems like everything is the wrong way round. Normally I get through my paddling sessions with ease and battle in the gym, running and swimming sessions. I love my paddling sessions, it’s what I do and hate the gym. I get claustrophobic when I have to train indoors. I believe I was built to be outdoors and that’s where I feel at home.

Well this week I have battled on the water, not really feeling at home in the boat with my mind wondering elsewhere. Where has the focus gone? To be honest I don’t know. In chatting to ...

This last week has gone great, I have got through some awesome training including a Salt Rock to Marine paddle of 46km. These sessions have a massive effect on my motivation and mindset at times. Not great to admit but the harder I train the crankier I get.

Well after a massive session on Friday and coaching at surfskischool the last thing I wanted to do was talk more about training. Sunday would be a day off!!!!! Wahoo!!!

Under 4 weeks to Hawaii, Marco Paulo

This week has been a big one for me but unfortunately not on the training front. I went to a job interview on Tuesday. It went really well and I will now be heading up the add sales at the SportsGuide Magazine in Durban.

It’s a great opportunity which I intend to grab with both hands. I will still be going to Hawaii for the Molokai race in May. The people at SportsGuide have been very understanding about my sport and the job really fits well with my training.

The last couple of day has been a real treat training in Stellenbosch. The scenery and pure beauty has captured my imagination, I will certainly be back soon to explore more of this areas great secrets.

They beauty for technology now days and especially 3g is that I can work anywhere with access to the internet wherever I am on my laptop. Jonkershoek and Argus
2008-03-10 09:17:34 by Barry Lewin
I woke up this morning to one of Cape Town’s finest day ever. My host Dan Hugo took me for an amazing run in Jonkershoek on the edge of Stellenbosch. I was a little out of my depth looking around the group at the start of the run with four tri-athletes and me the paddler. This was going to be interesting especially when I was told they were going to run for an hour and a half.

Solid week 1 back in the game!
2008-02-17 15:58:20 by Barry Lewin
I started training again on Monday after two weeks lay off for tick bite fever. The week has been great on a physical and mental level. First being out the house breathing fresh air is just great and getting the body back in action is even better.

The week started slowly with short sessions with training partner at the moment Ian Gray. When I say it went off slow I mean the boat went really slow after the long layoff. This was to be expected but as the week has progressed the boat is feeling more like normal with every session. We got in some great ses...

Breaking Free

The last 2 weeks have been a major challenge being sick and being stuck in doors. I was so keen to get the year off to a good start with some nice base work sessions and solid training. After a nice break over Xmas I was motivated and ready!

At first the doc never knew what the hell was wrong with me as nothing had come up in the blood tests. Mystery! Well after 5 days I couldn’t take the headaches any more and the doc ordered more blood tests and found I had tick bite fever. At least I knew what I had.

The blood tests came up all clean so I am not going to die but some time off is in order. The doc says a week at least, Eish! A week, just as I was getting going for the year.

I firmly believe keep an athlete off the playing field...

The Grand
2008-01-02 12:27:11 by Barry Lewin
Went out in Cape St Francis last night to see a band at the resort. The band consists of just 2 doods who just dig music and sharing it with their mates. They play gigs for the fun of it and have little plans of being famous or making money from their music.

Sounds strange, a couple amateur doods playing a gig, could be fun I thought. Well The Grand shocked me. They are flippen amazing and rocked the evening away. Maybe they should rethink their strategy and take their music more seriously, or is it their laid back demeanour that gives them the edge.
