Childhood Dreams
2012-08-27 04:29:49 by Barry Lewin

Childhood dreams are often something that seems like a fairytale. They lack the nuts and bolts of reality to actually happen. When recently presented with an opportunity to live out one of my personal childhood dreams, I couldnt resist, the logistics, dates, friends all made sense. Off on a surf safari 'boat trip'

Spent 10 days on a boat in the Maldives surfing up some serious jelly arms, sun burn and wax rash. It doesnt just happen, the last 3 years of hard w...

Movie In The Park - Chicago Style
2011-08-19 01:15:22 by Barry Lewin

One of the finest evenings with friend on tour ever. Dawid gets pumped about doing stuff the locals do in cities we travel to where I am more into tourist attractions but am slowly understanding why. Thanks to some guidance from a friend Gordon we went to a movie in a park in the middle of the city. Check out the video:

The city is just alive here in summer. People spend the whole winter indoors a...

Living Not By The Water But "IN IT"
2011-08-08 20:18:44 by Barry Lewin

The perks of my life right now are the many new people I meat or friends I get to catch up with from many corners of the globe that converge on surfski races. All after the same thrill of a crack downwind run, beating a friend or my favourite, to paddle in unique places.

I have been to the US Surfski Champs 3 times and the experience of San Francisco has been one that opened my eyes to different lifestyles and cultures. The city is a mix pot with its rou...

Memory Lane

A mate sent me this photo from fish a couple years ago.

Only 3 dudes in South Africa on tour at the Fish would try put a K3 on the roof of a hire car. I just love it!

Paddle Fest Time
2010-12-01 06:03:15 by Barry Lewin

I had a mare leaving Durban to Dubai this week for the shamaal. Flight was cancelled and went back home to come back the next day. Not ideal.

View from my accomadation, thanks Kath!

I am finally in the desert for what I like to call paddle fest. The money the race puts up draws the best paddlers in the world to this race. Plenty world champions and even better surfski paddlers from from accross the globe. Surfski is now truely a global sport and this is wh...

Put My Foot In It
2010-09-01 11:40:18 by Barry Lewin

Just as I was raging about the cool things we get to do when travelling like seeing Vanilla Ice live in my previous post here murfy’s law came up and bit me in the ass. I put my foot in it.

On our 6 hour drive to Portimao in the south of Portugal our van broke down in the middle of nowhere. It was 40 deg and almost died in the heat. Not ideal and had to get rescued. They loaded the ...

The only constant is change - Euro Trip
2010-08-25 18:58:06 by Barry Lewin

When planning this year I said to myself that I would cut down the travelling with shorter trip and to new places. I did the first of these in Spain for the Sella and the PLAN was to hit the Nelo Summer Challenge in Portugal for another short trip.

Why I have changed the plans? I don’t know.

The details are sketchy as I haven’t worked them all out, still doing most of the organising on the road.

Last week I changed my ticket back from Europe to say for two more races. One in southern Portugal and the other in Ibiza. Luckily for me I have...

Flag Raising and Final Prep
2010-08-06 18:13:20 by Barry Lewin

The last two days have been for me very chilled. My boat is ready and there is only so much I can paddle down the river. Rest up for the big and enjoy the surroundings.

Yesterday got started late. Not much happens in Spain early. Sun stays up till 10pm so people only eat at 11pm. So really no need to get going early. I went down to breakfast, wondered around town and then went back to bed in true siesta style. Sounds like the high life.

Spain - River Sella
2010-08-05 06:40:00 by Barry Lewin

Background

For me the travel bug bit me in the ass a long time ago and for the most part of the last 4 or 5 years I have been lucky enough to have travelled to some amazing place through sport. Many dream trips have been a reality and ticked off the bucket list.

There is one I have wanted to get to for as long as I can remember being the biggest canoe race in the world, the Sella Decent.  The procrastination of sa...

St Francis Chill Time
2010-01-04 05:49:05 by Barry Lewin

I have been to St Francis for New Year for the last 3 years. Love the chilled vibe and good waves. Had a cool break from the hussle and crowds in Durban over the crazy period with a relaxing surfing holiday.

The beach break at Seals went off and really got cracker surf. Caught up with my oos kaap mates and jolled hard at Full Stop on New Years. Made the most of the break. Now back to reality and some work. Ready and rearing to go!

Hong Kong - Day 2
2009-11-19 11:56:09 by Barry Lewin

Got the paddling out the way early this morning. There are min boats lying around so wanted to get a turn on what was so hit the water for a spin.

Had to get out the school and explore a bit today. Not worth being kooped up so we headed out to Ocean Park. Did the whole roller coast thing like typical tourists and found this mad cable car where we could see the whole paddling course and the extensive inlands.

Helped offload the boat container so we cou...

Hong Kong - Day 1
2009-11-18 04:56:59 by Barry Lewin

So excited to see a new spot, especially a part of the East with tons of culture. When the opportunity came up to head this way for the Hong Kong Dragon Run (www.thedragonrun.com.hk) I didnt hesitate booking the ticket. Arrived very late last night and hooked a spot to stay with a local friend (Thanks Rene) as it was to much of a mission to find the Sea School where I am staying so late.

Got some sleep last night which is great to try get the jet lag out the system. Missioned from the north of Hong kong down to the south where the b...
