I was chatting to a friend from Zini after the recent RBM Shaka challenge in Richards Bay about paddling up in Zululand. He pointed out that there were tons of new people paddling in Zini and invited me up to their time trial to do some coaching and answer the many questions they all had on technique and equipment.

The Varsity College Marine Surfski Series hosts the SA Schools Champs on the 25^th of March this year and teams up with the Surfskischool to run free clinics in Durban, PE and CT to get as many high school kids into surfski as possible.

We just had unreal condition on Friday eveing for race 8 of the Varsity College Surfski Series. Even better to have a huge field down for the race I sponsor. The series is very good to the Surfskischool so I really love the opportunity to give back a little and sponsor the race.

There are 4 Varsity College Surfskischool coaches out here in Hong Kong for the Dragon Run and we were all blown away with our hosts at the Sea School. The principal of the school, Bill has rocked this week. He has saffa's sleeping all over his house and the ex Ausi is now a sold saffa fan. We have converted him.

Where will our next champions come from? Well in Ausi the lifesaving system feeds surfski with tons of new talent and it shows in their results recently.

In South Africa the demagraphic of surfski is very old and there need to be a system to get more young people into the sport to create champion for generations to come. The Varsity College Surfskischool has a plan to change the face of surfski and take paddling to the schools.

Did a lesson today in Berkeley during the demo day. Went off really well and really enjoyed giving a lesson to a very different crowd with massively different questions than back home. Had paddlers from both the coasts and as far as New York! Had to limit the class to 5 so I could spend some quality time with each paddler. Really good fun passing on some knowledge.

The heart of the Varsity College Surfskischool is to grow the sport at all levels. We have made ground in many areas having success with the Jeep Apparel surfski team in Durban and projects getting ladies involved with 'Paddle Like A Girl' outings.

The Varsity College Surfskischool in Durban has been closed over the Xmas period due to the beach road closers but will be open with its first classes for 2009 on the 10^th Jan!

Classes are back to normal this week after a break for the SA double surfski champs last weekend. It was an awesome day for surfskischool but I believe the coaches must race as this gives them the chance to practice their skills and learn new techniques they can pass on to you’re the students. Well, this week ask the coaches how the race went and I bet they will have some new insight for you. 

Louis Stanford sent me some more great photo's of Saturdays classes. The surf conditions were challenging with a decent shore break but once past the waves the students enjoyed a great days paddling on a classic day in Durban.
