Varsity College Team for the Fish River Marathon
One of my amazing sponsors Varsity College are putting together a team to head down to the fish and have got me involved rallying the troops. We had a team meeting in Pmb with the squad to get all our entries sorted and hand out our racing kit. Fish doubles as the national intervarsity race so all the universities put together team to take part. Varsity College did really well the last 2 years and have a real chance of winning the girls. We lack a bit of depth in the guys for the overall but we have some strong dood that could take out some podium positions. It’s really awesome to see Varsity College really get behind sport in the last couple years and it won’t be long before they are a serious force to be reckoned with. Thanks to Christo and Carole for the support! Good luck to the team!
Over the last 2 weeks I have been going to lectures in the evening at the NSRI (National Sea Rescue Institute) in Durban to get my skippers ticket. Well I wrote the exam this evening! Did way more stressing than need be as the exam was very straight forward and to the point. Glad to have gone through the process as it’s a great thing to have and I am definitely more conscious of safety at sea now. Our lecture, Dave, had many stories of missions in high sea’s that could have been simply avoided. Really love the NSRI base, cool modern building with some amazing toys. Got to love big boats, felt like a little kid and want to go play the whole time.
In the stress of my lectures I did the Stella night race last night in the harbour with partner Wayne Wilson. Raced on Sunday, training 2 sessions on Monday and again the race would be my second session. Body was fine though and we broke away after the portage after the first lap. Got caught by Hank McGregor/Mike Arthur Herman/Andre Pohl. Went down to a sprint in a hectic south west that hit us on the water. Blotched the sprint, went too early and were to full of water. That’s racing! Good practice for this weekend’s double header of Natal K2 flat water on Saturday and Natal K2 River on Sunday leading into the Fish in a couple weeks time. |
