Had been taking part in the legends challenge so had little time to check the weather before arriving at my home club of marine for the open race of the surfski series. The wind had dropped from the day before but there was still enough bump from the South West to make things interesting. Even the rain cleared for most of the race!
Had a good start and lead almost all the way to the first buoy some 1,2km out. Matt Bouman came past just before the buoy. He was certainly the man to watch with his win the week before in the Euro Challenge in Spain. Made sure I got the wave, had to work quite hard so though he would break the bunch up. When I looked round some 200m later I was the only one left in contact. Stoked! Managed to still with Matt for most of the downwind leg to the shotgun pier. Matt really put the hammer down in the last bit before the turn and I went off, huge mistake! Missed his wave on the into the wind section and was caught in no mans land. Not ideal.
The bunch behind caught quick working together and settled in on the wave to recover. Grant Van De Walt paddling his new ski was going well and we broke away from Oscar, Herman and Andre. We put on a little gap and manage to hold it to the finish sharing the pull. I got a couple nice pushes off moving water on the last lap and felt strong. Even got grant off the wave once. He came back strong and we came down the same wave to the beach. Went down to the run, which I won taking 2nd.
Quite happy with the race, was looking on my Garmin records from years gone by and 2nd is by best result in the opening race of the season. Considering the last months focus it reinforces my saying ‘HARD WORK ALWAYS PAYS OFF!’
Had good friend Michelle Eray stay with me over the weekend, she ended up domiating the ladies. Check out her blog at http://micheray.wordpress.com/
Thanks to Anthony Grote for the photos, you a legend!
