I have raced the winter series in Durban Now for 12 years running. I remember my first race at North beach in 2001 crashing through the surf next to the pier in my borrowed Mark 1. I have been hooked on Surfski ever since and it taken me on a wild ride of adventure.
I am very proud of my results and achievement. I my first year I got 4th in the series and winning the juniors and since then I have been in the top 3 for 11 years.
This year has been my consistent seasons yet with my worse race in the 97% (of the winner’s time) range. I am in better shape in previous year thanks to less injuries, great rehab in the off season using kettle bells and the positive impact of a really good training group.
I have a lot to be thankful for this season and the support system that helps get me on the podium have been amazing.
Team Jeep South Africa/Jeep Apparel – always getting me on the start line looking like a pro in the best kit, providing a supportive family environment not just for me but 40 sport nut crazy men and women.
Varsity College – My longest standing sponsor, forward thinking attitude of doing something different and better than done before, pushing me to think out the box.
Custom Kayaks – My dad, Mark built me an crazy cool boat for the season. Finally something white and not a bright coloured monster. Light and really stiff. My dream machine!
GU – Wow, the best products ever, loving my Roctane and GU Brew Recovery.
Rudy project – the Hypermask is unreal.
Garmin South Africa – testing the Forerunner 910xt, keep outdoing themselves through innovation.
Future Life – the new Strawberry flavour is now a must in my pre-race routine.
GoPro South Africa – The Hero 2 is amazing, being in Mauritius last week without one would have been a disaster.
Thule – the racks on my new jammy are wicked, peace of mind my boats are safe on the best carriers.
The results are not officially out yet but with the www.surfski.co.za results page being very easy to navigate I have worked the series results out already. It was really tight this year with the top 3 being within 2%. Hank won 6 races with 100% record so he runs away with the series. Close in second with a 99.08 average of his top 6 races was Len Jenkins and myself in 3rd with 89.9. Seriously close!
