When I am not paddling you will most likely find me surfing especially in the Durban winter months of glassy sea’s and offshores. The surfing is a way to get away from the pressures and competition of racing but still get that daily salt water fix.
The shots above are just a couple of screen shots off my GoPro Hero 2 from last week. I certainly can’t do this fun stuff to much as I don’t want it detracting from my racing. When I have the time I like to put my share of time down in the sea, other than on my surfski.
That “escape” is really important to my mind set and motivation.
A lot of my mates go to the Berg to relax. It would seriously drive me mad sitting around doing nothing so I am certainly not talking about “relaxing” but rather something more challenging when I use the term escape. An escape can be anything like riding a section of single track on your mountain bike, catching the set wave of the day and making the take-off drop while surfing or even running up a mountain just to see the view on the other side. The escape is there to let you mind free of limitation and gain perspective.
The exercise and challenge work perfectly together to get the body and mind working together. I challenge you to find this space and it will enrich your life.
