With Cape point under the belt and I well deserved break on its way over the Xmas period I was stoked to find out that Goldfish were playing in Cape Town on Sunday evening. I have been dying to see them but have missed their shows in Durban with my travelling and racing.
Hit La Med at 4pm with some mates for a chow and a couple drinks. Never seen La Med that full, eva! Gold fish came on at 8 and rocked. Really impressed by this truly unique South A...

| Cape Point - Race Report |

The paddle around cape point on any day is a special experience that is to be savoured. This years race was weird one for me, I hadn’t done the distance needed but the competitive nature in me still wanted to go balls to the wall. A combination that doesn’t work to well.
I even asked myself why I was here at one point before the start if I knew I was under done. Well off the point that question...

It is late, I should be in bed and am still packing my bags. I won’t lie and say I am a little apprehensive about tom. The weather looks KAK and should be lucky to break 4 hours. Bit FAR!
Still digging Cape Town. Been getting around town doing some cool paddles and seeing some classic people. Did a millers run yesterday with host Justin and drove the course this morning with Dawid Mocke and 2 of his Varsity College Surfskischool students. Lekker lea...

Most of the racing I have done in Cape Town has been focused around the Fish Hoek, Granger bay or Hout Bay areas but there is a lot more to the Cape coast and got to explore some of it’s beauty today.
After the flight down this morning my host Justin Swart and his Cape Point partner Jamie Hamlin took me on a traditional paddle here in CT I have never done before, Gordon’s Bay to Strand. Jamie is the local of all locals at the Strand so was with the right people to do the paddle.
The wind was really blowing hard, can’t say...

Headed down south this morning for the Winkle Toti Winkle Surfski race. Have had a great record at this event so wanted to carry on the tradition. I have had 6 wins and never lost, only missing one race due to travelling before today.
Well the record is no longer, Hank McGregor put me in 2nd over the last couple km of the 12km race and I couldn’t respond. Pity I didn’t have an extra gear. Hank is a machine and seams to still have many gears despite winning the 250km PE-EL a week ago. How does he do it? Someone please let me know? Don’t think he k...

Hit a massive training session this morning. Was great to get the weekend off racing but with the Fenn Cape Point Challenge looming had to go long. Too little too late I suspect but for the mind it needed to be done.

I am seriously under done for Cape Point and I know it. The training for Dubai was short and sharp which are words that South Western Reefs don’t care much about. The body will not be ready but the only way I figure I am going to get throug...

Christo Petzer of Varsity College coming down to enjoy the day out at the school!
Been somewhat of a different week working on presentations and trying to see sponsors before everyone closes down for the year. Tried to juggle in some training but didn’t work as consistent as before Dubai with thoughts elsewhere.
After meetings this week I am super stoked to announce Varsity College will be continuing to sponsor the Va...

With the surfski media focused on the Southern Shamaal at present I haven’t been able to get the photos I really wanted from Dubai yet. I expect this file to grow in the next week or so but for now here are a couple.

The greatest surfski show of all time did not disappoint with one hell of a race. The race did have one downer with a chaos of a start. Many of the top notch field did not obey the starter’s obstructions and a number of the top contenders who did listen got a really bad start. I was one of this group that got caught out. Well that’s racing for you and am really disappointed many don’t have the ears or integrity to make things fare for all. Things will have to change, how I am not sure but with the money that’s now up for grabs this is just not on.

The worlds elite! Pic but Alain Jaques (www.surfski.info)
The race is tomorrow and I have to admit I am a bit stressed or nervous, I can’t tell, maybe both. I have thrown a lot at this race in training, think I am as prepared as I could be. Trying to enjoy the experience as much as possible and think just soaking everything in is helping me relax. It has been a special trip!
