Life in fast forward!
2008-03-27 06:47:13 by Barry Lewin
This week has been a big one for me but unfortunately not on the training front. I went to a job interview on Tuesday. It went really well and I will now be heading up the add sales at the SportsGuide Magazine in Durban.

It’s a great opportunity which I intend to grab with both hands. I will still be going to Hawaii for the Molokai race in May. The people at SportsGuide have been very understanding about my sport and the job really fits well with my training.

Most of my mates will be a bit shocked when they hear I have ...

In my travels through the Cape last week I was able to meet the owners of Rudy Project sun glasses. Rudy have recently come on board as one of my supply sponsors and I am proud to wear their amazing glasses.

I have been a fan of the Rudy brand for some time and currently own 2 sets of their glasses. I recon their polarised photochromic lenses are the best on the market hands down and the flotation devise works like a charm keepi...

The long hard yards in Cape Town
2008-03-18 02:59:58 by Barry Lewin
I am sticking around in Cape Town for a couple days to do some training and hit a luck by connecting with friend and Cape paddling legend Dawid Mocke (current world number 2) for a training session.

The idea was to try get in some long training in for the Molokai race in May so long, long, long it would be. We headed out from Fish Hoek to paddle to Cape Point and back. I have paddled that section of coast before on the Cape Point challenge many years ago but have never gone there and back.

SA Lifesaving Champs 08 - Blouberg - Silver and Bronze
2008-03-16 14:41:12 by Barry Lewin
The last 3 day has blown past with hectic wind in Blouberg (Cape Town) for the national lifesaving champs. The conditions weren’t great with cold water and side chop but that didn’t deter the racing.

I have to say it was one of the most competitive champs I have been to with the big boy...

They beauty for technology now days and especially 3g is that I can work anywhere with access to the internet wherever I am on my laptop. I m...

Jonkershoek and Argus
2008-03-10 09:17:34 by Barry Lewin
I woke up this morning to one of Cape Town’s finest day ever. My host Dan Hugo took me for an amazing run in Jonkershoek on the edge of Stellenbosch. I was a little out of my depth looking around the group at the start of the run with four tri-athletes and me the paddler. This was going to be interesting especially when I was told they were going to run for an hour and a half.

Mmmm, don’t think so!

My little chicken legs can’t handle that. I have been doing like 30min runs at home so was brave and aimed...

On the road again
2008-03-10 06:36:58 by Barry Lewin
I have just arrived in Cape Town along with the rest of South Africa’s cycling community. I however have a paddle under my arm and am not riding my bike through the airport like some over keen roadies that are down for tomorrow’s Argus Pick and Pay cycle tour which I am told is the biggest cycling race in the world.

I have no intentions in riding the 109km Argus, I have another mission in mind. I am here for the first real races of the year with the SA Lifesaving Champs at Blowberg from next Thursday to Saturday (13-15march) and then a short tri...

Puerto Rico World Cup 2008 race report by Ian Gray
2008-03-07 06:08:44 by Barry Lewin
One of my training buddies Ian Gray recently won the Culebra Challenge. Here is his take on the race!

For some, surfski paddling is about being out in warm tropical water with sunny blue skies, for others it’s about strong winds and hair-raising runs and for some it’s all about the beautiful places that you see with the sport. Combine all three of these and you’ve got surski paddling in Puerto Rico....
