SA Surfski World Cup
2008-06-29 11:36:35 by Barry Lewin

Awesome pic by Anthony Grote (www.anthonygrote.com) just seconds after the start when the bunch was still together.

Everyone has their day, today wasn’t mine!

I went way too far out to sea in the 33km downwind paddle from DUC to Westbrook and really messed up the line. My own fault, I should know better as this is my home course and training grown. Finished a bleak 14th!

SA Surfski World Cup Grand Pre Relay
2008-06-28 14:26:14 by Barry Lewin

What a day in Durban! The city dished out a classic for the Grand Pre relay today. The teams of 5 (4 paddlers and 1 swimmer) took to the water at the Durban Underwater Club for the short sprint event to warm up for the downwind race tomorrow. It’s not often we get to race in a team and the fun format is a great showcase for the sport creating an amazing spectator environment.

There were 3 main teams in contention most of the way with the ...

Surfski TV
2008-06-27 07:34:31 by Barry Lewin

What more can I say but this is the best example of lifting the game. The first edition of Surfski TV for the current Winter Surfski Series (season 2) hit the screens of Supersport last night with a bang. It’s amazing to see how the coverage of surfski has evolved with the passion of a small view.

The doods at D4 productions lead by Andrew King (GI) have captured the heart and sole of the sport in just 30min. If you didn’t catch it please programme your TV to catch one of the repeats, its well worth it. To Billy Harker who owns the show and is kind of like the director...

2008-06-27 07:31:58 by Barry Lewin

With all the hype and pressure that comes with World Cup week leading up to the biggest race in SA any excuse to take the mind off the chaos I extremely welcome.

Got a ring from of Billy Harker who invited me to a surfski crew day out. Glad to do something different so jumped at the chance to hang out with the best people ever for a day of fun exploring some of Durban’s great attractions.

Cycle Lab Surfski Race - Race Report
2008-06-23 06:26:08 by Barry Lewin
With floods on the South Coast and the winter solstice festival cancelled the Cycle Lab Surfski Race was moved to Addington on Sunday. Conditions cleaned up over the weekend producing flat glassy conditions. With the arrival of some of the Ausi’s for next weeks SA Surfski World Cup the scene was set for some really fast racing.

Didn’t have a great start and ended up off the back of the front bunch. Didn&...

Gamin Forerunner 405
2008-06-20 06:07:56 by Barry Lewin

I got a package from Gamin this week, the amazing Forerunner 405. Its way smaller than the traditional gps units like the 305 and has better coverage indoors and forests. The smaller unit is shaped like a normal wrist watch and is really user friendly to use. The most amazing aspect of the 405 is the modes are changed by simply running your finger round the unit like you would on and ipod. Would class technology that will certainly aid my training. I would be lost without ...

South Coast Flooding
2008-06-20 06:02:58 by Barry Lewin

There has been some hectic flooding on the Durban south coast this week with massive effects on the coastline. Unfortunately this weekends Winter Solstice Festival has been cancelled as most of the run and bike course are under water and the sea in just a mess.

Check this photo out of what it looks like.

The race on Sunday has been moved to addington. All the details on www.surfski.co.za

My New Mountain Bike
2008-06-17 16:30:44 by Barry Lewin
I thought I would share a little passion of mine that has been growing over the last couple months. Been loving my mountain biking! It’s as free a sport as one could pick up and living where we do it’s the best way to appreciate our amazing landscape, ride it, and then ride it again just to make sure you didn’t miss it.

I saved my ass off to get to Hawaii earlier this year and had some left over after the trip, what to do, what to do, well I splashed out on a new bike. Went for a Specialised Stunt Jumper 21’. It is simply wicked. Chan...

Hi Q Marine Surfski Race - Race Report
2008-06-17 07:21:35 by Barry Lewin
The second marine race of the winter series always comes with its thrills and spills thanks to the many surf turns in the dynamic course.

This year was no exception. I got a good start and lucky found myself in the diamond till the first buoy. The front bunch at the turn pretty large with like 10 boats hanging onto East Cape paddler Richard ‘chopp...

Great news, the SA Surfski World Cup has finally found a sponsor!

Sardine Run and Expo
2008-06-13 15:25:37 by Barry Lewin
‘The greatest shoal on earth’ is one of the many names I have heard the Sardine Run getting called this week. Well I agree, certainly one amazing site. Was lucky enough to check out the small fish beaching on the south coast this morning.

After a big 2 weeks the body was calling for an easier week. Trying to listen to the body as best I can so been backing off this week. Not always that easy when all you want to do is kick down. Had a mate Nico (German Xterra and mountain bike athlete) come stay with me for the week and think he will be wit...

Varsity College Durban Surfskischool Newsletter
2008-06-11 06:58:36 by Barry Lewin
The lessons have really kicked into gear over the last week with some amazing conditions. Wednesday afternoon session was great with small surf and a light SW the group did a video session where they could see themselves paddle and analyse their technique. Thanks to Sean from Jeep Surf and Adventures for the use of the camera. I intend on doing this a lot in the future.

Friday saw us host a school from Richards Bay. Paddling has really taken off in Zululand and it was great to see all the kids come for a coaching session.

Training Journal 2nd to 8th June
2008-06-11 06:47:37 by Barry Lewin
I have to comment that this was the best week ever. The two time trails were in flat, glassy, windless conditions, got some great surf (haven’t had waves here in a while) and the wind blew for the race on Sunday! Quite a fun week where training seam way more fun, love weeks like this when things flow.

I had a ton of questions about training after last weeks training journal. Will try post some more about training on the site in the coming weeks.

Discovery Winkle Surfski Race - Race Report
2008-06-09 05:16:07 by Barry Lewin
Got an awesome sms last night from Billy Harker, the organiser of the Winter series say that due to a strong SW wind the race course today would be changed to a 23km downwind from Scottbrough to Winkle!

Stoked, DOWNWIND!!!!!!!!!!!

Downwind paddling is a true challenge and just the most fun you can have paddling in the sea. The race was on. The weather driving down the south coast wasn’t great and people were hiding under layers of Jackets at the start. It didn’t bother anyone, smiles all around cause the sea was wh...

I have had a number of requests to post my training programme on the site.

I would rather post what training I have actually done. Good intentions and bravery sets the programme for the week which is not always what gets done. The reality is looking back on the week and seeing what you have accomplished.

So here is what I did last week!

Hansa 5 Beaches - Race Report
2008-06-02 05:08:16 by Barry Lewin
Driving down the South Coast for the 4th race of the Discovery Menshealth surfski series I was pumped to be back in my home land doing what I love.

The 5 beaches was start some 15 years back by Sam Wyer from Umkomaas to Toti, stopping at Karridene, Winkle and Warner beaches. Unfortunately we lost Sam last year and the race lives on as a tribute to the legend he was.

I stopped at the finish on the way down to make in a gps point in on my Garmin to notice the SW wind the day before had push in some swell and the point...
