Went to a talk this evening by Anton Erasmus from the East Cape and Gavin Dickenson from Dubai about the Southern Shamaal. The old PE – EL race has been rehashed into a new format with some great input from the Dubai team. Great for the sport of paddling to see the tradition of this challenge being kept alive. Brave is what I would call me deciding at the last minute to race the second race of this iconic multisport series on Shongweni’s notoriously hilly course. My partner who was to race the 2 man teams with fell ill with flu and so decide to lift the game. 

It’s Saturday evening, dark and very silent as I sit on the deck in front of my 5 start tent in the Shongweni Msinsi reserve. The frogs on the waters edge the only sounds in the night. Why would you ask am I sitting in the dark on a Saturday night?

Woke this morning to the sweet sound of birds chirping outside my window and the drone on the surf through the trees in front of the digs after some 18 hours worth of traveling yesterday. The beauty of Durban always gives me a classic wake up call every time I get home form a trip. Glad to be back even if it means catching up the work I have missed over the last 2 weeks.

One of the best things about being a paddler is you get to travel. With a very tender body I hopped on a plain to Sydney for a well deserved week off to visit some mates. 

With the banks of the flooded Avon River packed to the brim with 900 boats of all shapes and sizes. I get a tap on my shoulder and a warm, ‘How ya mate’ from one of the local lads I had met the day before at the press briefing. ‘You Saffa’s here to mild again are ya?’ He bellows! After a week of hearing the Ausi’s speak I replied ‘ya bet ya mate!’ without even realising what I had said. Hehe 

Perth - Durban canoeist Barry Lewin smashed the 25 year old K1 record in winning the Brookfield Multiplex Avon Descent singles race on a very full Avon and Swan rivers.

Lewin covered the 136km two-day race in 7:53.03 hours, breaking Darryl Long's 1983 record of 8:04.50 hours, thanks to the fast flowing water in the rivers swollen by heavy rains and dams opened to ease pressure from the localised storms.
