Pic from fish 2 years ago with Jeff Smith!

My word am I excited today. There is a buzz inn the air and I am 1000km from our base for the next 5 days in Cradock.

The eastern cape comes alive this week with the pilgrimage of thousands of paddlers to the Fish Canoe Marathon. The town of Cradock and its amazingly welcoming farming community gets overrun for a week of the best river paddling in the country. By far my favourite race on the...

Surfing with dolphins and mountain biking
2008-09-28 16:07:27 by Barry Lewin

The website has been pretty serious of late with race reports, equipment reviews sponsors and little humour. I do get to have some fun in-between the training, coaching and work.

Da Real Downwind Series Race 2
2008-09-27 11:08:50 by Barry Lewin

Jumped in a double for the second race of the Da Real Downwind Series. Paddled with my fish partner Wayne Wilson but with me driving this time! Wayne is driving for next weeks Fish River Marathon.

The focus has been quality in K1’s the last couple weeks since the first race of the downwind series and haven’t been in a ski at all in the last couple weeks. Was great being back in the ski. I have to admit my mind wasn’t really ready to race. It’s been crazy at the digs having Ant Stott back from winning the world marathon champs. We had a braai for him, ...

Double Header KZN Champs Weekend
2008-09-15 02:07:03 by Barry Lewin

The weekend was packed with some cool racing. The last couple years I haven’t done much on the local calendar over this period of the yea so have missed out on some cool races. The y have been especially fun the K2 with certainly hasn’t come out the racks in some time.

First came the KZN K2 flat water at Blue Lagoon hosted by my own club, Kingfisher! Paddling with my fish partner Wayne Wilson we hoped to work on our combo over the weekends ...

Varsity College Team for the Fish River Marathon

One of my amazing sponsors Varsity College are putting together a team to head down to the fish and have got me involved rallying the troops. We had a team meeting in Pmb with the squad to get all our entries sorted and hand out our racing kit. Fish doubles as the national intervarsity race so all the universities put together team to take part. Varsity Co...

Garmin Edge 705
2008-09-07 13:03:07 by Barry Lewin

I got an awesome package from Garmin last week, a new Edge 705. The unit is traditionally not used for paddling. It’s a bike gps but it has the best screen and data in the Garmin range. Thinking outside the box there is no reason this unit can’t be used for paddling.

The screen is amazing. It is full colour. With many other gps units the background is grey with black markings. This is sometimes hard to see when your eyes are foc...

Da Real Downwind Series Race 1 Win - Synergy WoW
2008-09-07 12:23:43 by Barry Lewin

In Durban we get a regular weather phenomenon where our warm ocean current (Agulhas Current) that runs some 6- 8km off the coast. The massive body of water retains its heat as it travels down the coast from Mozambique. This causes an off shore wind to blow most morning in winter.

Well this offshore is not a good sign if you want the NE wind to blow. The offshore keeps the wind away. This wasn’t a good sign this morning ...

Le Troquet - Pure Decadence!
2008-09-06 15:27:11 by Barry Lewin

New friends Kymmie and Bianca who have been staying at the digs the last week or so with house mate Hev unfortunately had to say goodbye to Peace Cottage on Friday. Hev wanted to celebrate their time with us and show off her parent’s restaurant that we have heard tons about.

Hev’s parents have been to the digs on a number of occasions and I was dying to check out the hype. Gilbert and Annick Bordier have run their restaurant, LE TROQUET in its current location at the Village Market in Westville for the last 4 years and before that for the last 25years in the Westvi...

Inspiration
2008-09-05 16:11:27 by Barry Lewin

People find there inspiration in totally different places. What makes you tick, gives you a chill down your spine or gets you amped like never before?

For most it’s the slightest thing, like a catchy tune or a smile from a friend can change their mood instantly. I have been trying to pick up on the things that give me butterflies in my tummy and give me the little lift I need to get through the next interval in training or through the last email in the inbox.

Family, I am very lucky to have a close nit family that are a huge suppor...

Team Boat Pondering
2008-09-02 17:52:58 by Barry Lewin

Coming out the bottom of Cradock Wier in the last K2 Fish with Partner Jeff Smith!

The plan for this year has been very different to that of last year. In order to make the best possible run into Dubai I have chosen not to head to too many of the international events on the calendar like the US surfski champs. Instead I am going to be racing more of the local season here in SA. The cost of travelling is massive and at the moment I have to pick my trips and m...
