I always wonder how much holiday to take in December? Is a month long enough, is two months two long. So have used my state of mind to tell when I am ready rather than the body.
Sitting at lunch I really wanted to paddle this afternoon. I ‘WANTED’ to paddle. There was my sign if you could call it that. So did my first set in the river this afternoon of 1h20min, 10x4 min at 75-80% heart rate shown on my on my Garmin 705 edge with 2 of the 10 a little higher when I had to pull the bunch. All tired now but went why better than my first session last year. Haven&rsquo...

| Natal Lifesaving Champs |

Short, sharp and fun racing. Natal champs was over the weekend at Pirates which meant surf, even on a small day. I only do the ski races which makes it an easy weeks racing compared to most doing champs.
Had a good couple warm ups Saturday afternoon with the ski relay and a ski heat. Lead them both and felt great considering I have had a 6 week break from training.
Sunday was the ski final. Had a good start in a quality field. Got away with Hank McGregor and held him to the can and ran run for run coming home. Got really outdone in ...

| Marine Surfski Series - Race 2 |

|
West came through Friday morning calming a very angry sea from the day before into a flat blustery paddle. An amazing field of well over 200 started with small surf and a 15km/h SW still blowing.
Had a good start and led at the first boy but had the world bearing down on me from behind. Decided to park of in the bunch soon after the turn and Hank broke the bunch up to only 3 at the New Pier turn, Grant Van ...

Filling Ant's bottle on top of Berma!
It’s Sunday evening and I am a broken man, totally stuffed from a hectic last 4 days of very very very early mornings. With my eyes telling me its time to hit the sack I can help but seam inspired by the hero’s I have encountered the last couple days.
What do I mean but hero’s? I see a hero is a person’s character, something unique the stands out.

| Superman |

Saw an amazing physical feet today. Ant Stott lived up to his nick name of Superman today in the second leg of the Duzi canoe marathon paddling his way from 4 min down to a massive 13min lead. Hectic!
Had a classic ride on my mtb over Numeni hill and along the second half of the course to Inanda Dam seconding along the way. Only one more day of Duzi fever left as the 1400 strong field head into Durban tomorrow. ...

| Duzi Fever |

Housemate Ant Stott on Pinetree portage running like a machine!
The whole of KZN gets run over this week by Duzi fever and I can’t help getting involved in some way, so much tradition that got me hooked on paddling from the start.
My first Duzi was a mare, 21h, broke the boat on day 1 and 2, limped home with a major spirit of adventure. The competitive nature of my paddling only surfaced later but the seed was s...

| Marine Surfski Series - Race 1 |
| 2009-01-10 09:19:11 by Barry Lewin
|
|
The hottest day in at least a year and some testing condition didn’t deter some 170 paddlers on Friday evening at the first race of the Marine Surfski Series in Durban.
The east picked up in the afternoon making the surf very tricky at Marine so the organisers opted for a backline start. Everyone had 10min to get out and line up before the gun went. Think it prevented tons of swimming as the b...

| St Francis Time Out |
| 2009-01-02 02:19:58 by Barry Lewin

|

I am currently in the amazing little town of St Francis in the Eastern Cape at the moment taking some valued time out. After a mammoth effort in training for Dubai I have been super blown out. Body telling me something so listening for a change.
Staying with the Woods family and joined by some classic friends the last week has been top notch. Wind has been blowing so have only had one day of surf at Seals, we did get it cooking though. Ushered in New Years ...
