Winkle Toti Winkle - Back to why I paddle
2009-12-19 14:39:34 by Barry Lewin

Tuesday lying on my couch in the heart of beer and ice cream season (rest), I checked the weather to see the SW was going to blow for the Winkle Toti Winkle the next day and that the course would be changed to a downwind.

Mmmmmm, temping. I am meant to be on a break but couldn’t resist the wind calling. Not to race, not for anything else but to be out in the sea in some proper south coast runs.
Headed down the coast to stay at a second home of mine, hooked up a table tennis compo that evening with the team...

Southern Shamaal in my words!
2009-12-19 14:20:33 by Barry Lewin

It’s been a chaotic week back in Durban of catching up with mates and family so this blog is a little over due. It has given me some to reflect on the huge high.

Big shoes to fill?
The history of this event is just immense from the original challenge of Johnny Woods racing John Ball from PE-EL to my dad’s record on the sunshine coast. I have been hearing stories of the race from before I could walk. Now with no experience on the course named as national team captain was quite a surprise and a m...

Southern Shamaal Preview
2009-12-04 15:15:48 by Barry Lewin

Have had a rocky travel home from Dubai with some hectic delays. Got back at 2am and flew out at 6am. Had enought time in my 4 hours in Durban to shower, repack my bag and see my dearest mother half asleep.

Spent the day with my team mates Richard 'chopper' Von Wildermann and Bevin Manson. Tested out some combo's in a double and looking good for the first day tomorrow. Day 1 will be from Port Alfred to Woody Cape. Chopper with be doing singles first up tomo...

A young Team South Africa believe they have a fighting chance to turn the tables on Australia in the annual Southern Shamaal International Surfski Challenge that will take place over 240 kilometres between Port Elizabeth and East London from December 5 to 8.

Last year, the home team lacked spark and received a humiliating 45-minute drubbing at the ha...

Dubai Shamaal Experience - Race report 09
2009-12-03 06:39:02 by Barry Lewin

The proving ground. I believe that Dubai is the strongest field in any race in the world right now. Yes it has the money as the richest race in the world to draw the paddlers in but for me the whole vibe on the race is all about getting the chance to race against the best in the world. To me, this is the ultimate challenge.

I got to Dubai a week before the race which is way early after a decent tour to Hong Kong. Not sure if being that early is wise but my base at the Randall’s which has become my Dubai base over the last 4 years they have hosted...

2009-12-01 07:10:58 by Barry Lewin

Smiles all around the camp at the moment here at the Dubai Shamaal Surfski race venue at DIMC as the wind (Shamaal is a desert wind) the race was named after has been blowing the last 2 days and reports are it will blow tomorrow over the race.
