4 Nations Lifesaving International
2009-03-30 06:54:36 by Barry Lewin

With intrusions from Julia my amazing physio to rest my shoulder and Surfskischool classes being cancelled due to a buster SW I had the weekend kind of off to go watch the 4 Nations at Pirate.

What a show! The Ausi’s dominated as expected but the racing was intense. We haven’t had an international since 2000 so great for the sport and great to watch, had a ball. Got to hang out with some mates from the USA I stay with on my tours through California.

Hope I can start paddling soon as I am super inspired now after watching the weekend...

Marine Surfski Series Race 9
2009-03-30 06:28:39 by Barry Lewin

Last race of the series saw a large turn out in rough NE conditions. Trevor the race organizer was busy with the 4 nations and asked me to help out. Ended up setting the course and doing prize giving to take some pressure off him.

Ended up jumping in and racing between organizing stuff. Shoulder felt good after some solid work from my physio during the week. Got 3rd behind Matt Bouman and Grant Van De Walt.

The Marine Prize giving will be on Monday 30th at Billy’s at 7pm. Be there!

Frustration and True Perspective
2009-03-30 06:20:27 by Barry Lewin

Have had a shocker of a week. No other way to put it. Pinched nerve in my shoulder and plenty time in pain on the physio table. No training in a critical period 2 weeks before SA surfski champs. Sickness to injury. Cant win!

In all the chaos and doubt this week a friend/housemate got dealt a huge blow in loosing her brother. My worries and stress seam so miniscule in comparison. I send my love to Hev and her family in this tough time.

2009-03-22 14:43:12 by Barry Lewin

Day 1 – Taplin Win!

Lifesaving champs always pops up out of nowhere every year and before you know it you on the line with very little time in the Spec ski. No different this year. Paddled my Titan (www.customkayaks.co.za) for the first time yesterday since Natal Champs. Caught some waves and did a couple starts. Please don’t take my prep as the norm or the way to do thing, life just takes over sometimes.

Only had one event today, the Taplin. Basically 1 swimm...

Here is my article for the next edition of SportsGuide magazine. You can download the mag off the web at www.sportsguide.co.za or pick one up for FREE at your local sports store.

I was lucky enough to sit and watch Bianca put the design to my writing, she is just brilliant. No wonder the mag is going through the roof! Well done!

Marine Surfski Series - Race 8
2009-03-16 06:42:42 by Barry Lewin

For some fun and variety I jumped in a double with my dad. First time we have paddled in the same boat since I was 13 years old. Been a while hey. Was a blast, the old man is machine! Scary to think he is 53. Hope I am in his shape at his age.

We had a race with a couple of the local crews, coming second to Herman Chalupsky and Andre Pohl. Great to be back on the water after a very up and down 10 days. Lets hope my health is good through SA Lifesaving champs this week!

Blast from the past - Wayne Lifesaving Videos
2009-03-16 06:38:24 by Barry Lewin

A fitting time to put this up with SA Lifesaving this week. One of our Marine Surf Lifesaving Club Members, Wayne Ashford, and good friend to me in recent times has recently found some classic old lifesaving footage for way back in the day. He has spent some long hours converting its format and cutting it into workable videos. Well is hard work has paid off and he has just uploaded it all up onto youtube.

This is where it all started for me as a nipper, watching the legends of the time taking on mountainous surf with grace and humility. I grew up at Marine and am really proud of its...

Dodging a Bullet
2009-03-11 11:31:33 by Barry Lewin

The hospital stay was short, blood tests good (only a small bug that was smashed with meds) and I am almost back to 100%. A true feeling of confidence now that I dodged a bullet is some way. The way I felt when I rolled through the hospital front door (in pain) to now is quite some contrast and really expected way worse. Count my blessings I can start moving the arms slowly tomorrow. Wahoo! I can only read books on the coach for so long before I go mad.

Training week derailed with a visit to the hospital
2009-03-08 16:37:56 by Barry Lewin

Really felt great with this weeks training, a classic long bike ride and surfing a tugs wave in my K1 at the end of a paddle in the harbour on Tuesday a true highlight.

Parachute Band
2009-03-08 14:58:16 by Barry Lewin

My fish Partner from last year, Wayne Wilson organised our whole training group tickets to a classic show last night. Well done to Wayne on getting the team out of the river and opening some minds. The Show was put on by CRC, a big church group and it featured 2 acts in Parachute Bands headlining with Support from Raucous. Both came out from New Zealand and are touring around South Africa at the moment. Had a cool time doing something a bit differ...

Online coaching - A new age!
2009-03-02 07:54:19 by Barry Lewin

With huge advances in technology in the last while it’s made having an online coach possible. What? An online coach? Yip! I first saw the concept being used about 2 years ago by one of mate, Dan Hugo (www.dghugo.com) who used a website called Training Peaks to upload data from his Garmin so his coach Gary Mandy could view it and analyse his training, adjusting his programme all on Dan’s online log.

It is a great idea and it’s taking off in the paddling world now to!

Glenwood hit the Varsity College Surfskischool
2009-03-01 13:50:42 by Barry Lewin

The heart of the Varsity College Surfskischool is to grow the sport at all levels. We have made ground in many areas having success with the Jeep Apparel surfski team in Durban and projects getting ladies involved with 'Paddle Like A Girl' outings.

We had a huge success with the Richards Bay High School coming down to the school last year and made me think over the Xmas break. Well I set a goal this year to start a little y...
