My partner dropped out at the last minute so jumped in with a young guy from Cape Town who is showing good form in Sean Rice. We had no time in the boat together. We didn’t go to badly, both feeling the effects of the 3rd race in as many days taking its tole on the body. Finished 5th! Dawid Mocke, Cape Town head honcho and I took the Varsity College Surfskischool on tour. The goal was to expose a new people to the sport that would not have seen it before. The Plett main beach is super packed over Easter weekend and with the SA champs on the door was open to have some classes over the weekend as well as the race. What a jol!! We had an amazing response from the crowd on the beach with tons having a go for the first time.

Felt the effort the day before in PE and paid for my lack of fitness. 3 laps of 8km in a strong SW plus 3 surf zones at the lookout mouth made for an honest day on the water. Was good for 2 laps but faded on the last loosing a spot to end 6th.

The Splash festival put on a great show with a 2 lap course out to the boiler, bell boy, coke can and back to the base at Hobie beach.
Lost the bunch early, lacking some zip, tried not to panic and settled behind the second bunch to save energy for the downwind section. Raged with the wind behind me passing tons to get up to 6th by the turn for the second lap. Again sat in the tail to save energy for the last section with the wind behind. It worked...

Hit the road to PE, long drive, some 10hours. Got there early enough to hit a paddle at Summer Strand. Quite a few doods ended up on a group paddle out to the point. PE dealt out one of the best paddles of the year, awesome waves on the way home and great company. Took the camera with on the paddle, here are videos of the session!

On the road tomorrow down to the OOS KAAP (east cape) to race the opening races of the season. There is a world cup event In PE on Friday and then SA single and double surfski champs in Plett. Three races in 3 days.

A sad week but must push on, hit a good downwind with Billy Harker and Brett Bartho on Monday evening. Hit my first session on Friday with no pain in my shoulder and felt solid. First paddle with no pain in 2 weeks so can not tell my joy!
Freedom! Hit the downwind on Saturday with my dad and his paddling mates, what legends. So good to be back on the water and appreciate it that little bit more what it has been taken away for even just a short time.

Had some of the USA lifesaving team stay with me over the last week. Classic people. They got a chance to see some game parks and hang out in Durban. I took some time out to take them down the south coast for a surf at green point. Top day!
