Surfski Series Race 4 - Race Report - 2nd
2009-05-31 12:16:29 by Barry Lewin

The 5 beaches is by far one of my favourite races on the calendar, great people on the south coast and old school fun coming through the surf on the 5 beaches along the course. Well huge surf that has smashed the coast made the race impossible forcing Billy Harker to move it to town and have a 2 lapper from Marine. Good call for the large field.

There is some small part of me that would love to have taken on the south coast today. I remember years crashing through mountainous surf. The sport is going in the right direction but there are still a small few with the skills and ...

Surfski Series Race 3 - Race Report - 2nd
2009-05-24 11:42:08 by Barry Lewin

Its really feels strange starting a surfski race at the Stella Canoe Club in the harbour after the first 2 races of the series we beach starts. Less tension worrying about getting away through the surf. Got away fine and settled in the bunch and even did one small stint on the front (more to see if my rudder was clear of weed) on the 10km loop out the harbour.

It was super low tide today so the root thought he harbour was simple until the mouth where there is massive construction works widening the harbour walls. The water starts rebounding off the ships as you near the mout...

My bank balance still hasn’t recovered after last years trip!

Surfski Series Race 2 - Race Report - 2nd
2009-05-17 17:33:16 by Barry Lewin

I love racing season, especially the winter series. Classic weekend with your mates on some of the best beaches in the world. Been getting mails from www.barrylewin.co.za reads in Europe and Canada bitching and moaning about the stupidly cold conditions they paddle in.

Well Durban don’t have no winter, O boy and it delivered again today. Moderate surf with a stiff SW wind (died during the race) and the sun shining.

Didn’t get a great start. Not like me! Was standing in hole and got held by a wave. Just made the back of the front bunch into t...

Surfski Series Race 1 - Race Report - 2nd

All photos by Anthony Grote. www.anthonygrote.com

Had been taking part in the legends challenge so had little time to check the weather before arriving at my home club of marine for the open race of the surfski series. The wind had dropped from the day before but there was still enough bump from the South West to make things interesting. Even the rain cleared for most of the race!

Had a good start and lead almost all the way to the f...

South African Rugby Legends Associations (SARLA) Challenge
2009-05-11 14:21:43 by Barry Lewin

My biggest supporter and kind of second family in Jeep Apparel invited a number of their athletes to take part in the SARLA Challenge. It consisted 4 teams taking on a number of events over 3 days.

The teams consisted of a SALRA, ELAN, MERCURY and JEEP team. The event was an awesome team building experience for me and our squad with the events built around team work and fun.

We dominated the mountain bike and adventure challenge on Friday. Got smoked into last place in the golf (the shame is bad) on Saturday. Got 3rd in the fishing, 1st in the Ushaka challenge and 3r...

Cracker Week and New Durban Training Group!
2009-05-04 05:25:45 by Barry Lewin

High to low, low to high. Always back and forth!

Training has been rocky the last 2 months but finally making ground in the right direction, I hope anyway. Raced over Easter weekend on a high after coming off an injury, was on a massive low the following week from just being blown from racing 3 days in a row. Back to a high this week with a cracker, lets hope it stays that way. The motivation is there so no reason why not, just need to keep the work rate up.

A couple of the doods training together in Durban have got together to form an of...
