The C2C4C crew had the great opportunity to fly to Joberg yesterday to attend the launch of one of Acer’s new offerings. Russ, Oj, Bennie, Pat and myself hit the 6am flight to the welcome of the Acer marketing people for breakfast on the other end.

The day went off really well. Gave us a chance to interact with the awesome people who had put their money where their mouth was and got behind the C2C4C. Learnt a lot about their new rage and the specific unit th...

| Meeting Jeremy Burfoot - London to Sydney |

|
In the preparations for C2C4C our expedition leader Russel Symcox got in touch with an adventurer named Jeremy Burfoot who rode around New Zealand to raise awareness for cancer on a jetski.

Jeremy is himself a cancer survivor and threw his name behind our campaign from the beginning. He kindly sent over his book which he wrote after his expedition and gave us some insight into some of the challenges we should expect.

| King of the Bay - 1st Double |
| 2010-05-24 05:08:44 by Barry Lewin
|
|
I have to say I haven’t been this amped to race for some time. Felt like a kid again. The break from the racing scene has had an effect and definitely positive on the motivation.

Decided to race double in the season this year. Scottbrough to Brighton this year is double and want to give it a good crack. Makes sense to spend some time in the double as it’s something that has to be practiced. Even better when I convinced Ant Stott to jum...

| Acer Interview |
| 2010-05-24 05:01:16 by Barry Lewin
|
|
I recently did an interview for Acer (C2C4C sponsor) about my experience on the trip. Nice cap off after the trip. Amazing we still getting good awareness with SABC news this week and an Article in the Sunday Tribune. Stoked.
Acer in Sport
Acer; How did your adventure start guys?
Barry; Better for Russ to answer this one as he is C2C4C. Russ put the project together after a sad day at Pam Ribbink’s Funeral (Jason and Brandon’s mom). Russ phoned me with some ideas and said we needed to do something in the...

| C2C4C Diary - Day 23 |
| 2010-05-19 04:02:35 by Barry Lewin
|
|
It’s been a week since the dream of C2C4C became a reality. I have really tried hard to update the diary entry but this specific last day needed some processing before putting thoughts to paper. Sorry it a week late but here is the diary entry for day 23, a day I will remember as one that changed my life.
5am – Woke Jason up. Think he slept in his suit he was so amped for a big day. Haha! Drove to the other B&B in Brand Se Baai where the rest of the team where staying to a warm welcome. Everyone super excited about the challenge of the day.

| C2C4C Diary - Day 22 |
| 2010-05-11 16:22:17 by Barry Lewin
|
|
930am – Sitting 12km into the ride I think I had my worst nightmare. If the west coast wasn’t kicking us in the balls enough Jason’s ski had an electrical malfunction and we had to hit reverse and tow him back to the start. What a mission. We had to set up another spare ski and fill it with petrol. All of this wet and super cold. The water here is frik cold, way colder than even Cape Town which meant froze on the beach for ages. Never been that cold.
11am – Finally got going for the second time. Conditions were not great and the west coast gave us another ...

| C2C4C Diary - Day 22 |

|
845am pushed out of the bay with big hopes of covering some decent distance to make up for yesterdays missed riding. No such luck. The 7m swell that was rolling up the coast and 20 knot head wind mean slow going.
The first 30m was just a nightmare. The swell and wind were both side on from different directions making the sea a confused mess. The visibility was really bad and we had to stick really close to each other to be safe. This meant even extra chop from each others ski, one had to keep sharp the whole time. No easy. The sun came out eventually and never warmed us up. Haha,...

|
7am – Woke up and looked outside, the wind was blowing so hard the birds were walking down the beach and the rain was bucketing. Picked up my phone and saw an sms to the team calling off the day. What a relief.
Turned over and caught up on some valued sleep.
10am – Worked on the expedition website photo gallery. I am the only one carrying a camera on the water so put up a whole lot of my stuff. Check it out at www.coast2coast4cansa.co.za

| C2C4C Diary - Day 19 |
| 2010-05-09 03:38:37 by Barry Lewin
|
|
930am – Leaving CT out the V & A under the backdrop of table mountain was special. CT was a big milestone and the feeling is the we are on the homeward leg now that we are heading up the west coast.
1030am – Stopped in to Big Bay to see family and friends. Ended hanging out with Gigs for a while and checking out his new surf shop.
12pm – Surf was quite big at big bay, all go out safely and hit the west coast proper.
We had a decent ride with fast condition. We had to move our asses after our long stop.

7am – hit the long drive out to Millers. Everything is far in CT and seem to be driving forever here. Awesome views, cape is awesome when the weather comes right.
845am – Spoke to soon as the water was freezing and felt like the wind was blowing straight through me.
9am – Grouped off Cape Point to discuss tactics for the day to come. We needed to keep tight formation of Jason in the front leading through the front. Mark and Bennie next and then Rusty, Bones and myself at the back.

| C2C4C Diary - Day 17 |

|
9am - Hotel breakfast getting tired by now and opt for some cool muesli and yogurt to make it interesting. Still half asleep when was asked to pick up some slack by driving trailers across town. Eish. Cancelled some plans to meet friend on the day off and headed out to the Yamaha in strand to make sure the waverunners were all on track to get us round the point tomorrow. The extra sleep doing me wonders.
1230pm – Finally got on the road today after Yamaha and replacing bolts on the trailer. Learning a lot about mechanics on this trip and even understood some of the stu...

9am – Later start but still min sleep after one hell of a day yesterday on the water for every minute of light. Wind had hit as predicted and the ground crew who kakked on us for pushing it was now coming round to understand the move and how it had kept us in the game.
OOO the ride was bumpy all the way across the first bay for some 35km until we could hide from the well under a section of mountain. The wind really channelled down the mountain and couldn’t even talk to the team mates when we stopped to talk Mark’s water sample.
11am...

620am – the team rounded the Mossel Bay point on route. Vibe in the air of only one goal, hurry up. The weather reports were saying there was some very bad weather on its way off CT and if we could run as far as possible we could maybe still make Miller point tomorrow on time but we had to push.
9am – Refuel at Stillbaai and straight back on the water. Consistent start and good average but need to pick up the pace.
12am – Landed in our planned stop for the day in Struisbaai. The 140km from the last stop was by far the fastest aver...

8am – Latest start on tour so far. Simple things make me smile. Climbed into a new thicker 4mm dry wetsuit today as well. Rocked my world.
Plett has got to be the best stop so far. Don’t want to leave!
1030am – Launch with the best moral since day 1. Think the team is just getting warmed up and gelling. Amazing what good food from Off the hook in Plett can do.
11am – Stopped at Robberg to swim with the Seals, special experience. Got some cracker photos, will post on facebook soon, to tired now...

6am – Standing on Hoby Beach in pitch black dark. As we move down the coast the light changes and we are no longer able to launch as early as when we started. First sign of the shear distance we have covered already.
620am – Push off and cop a spray in the face and loose my breath. OOO the water is also getting colder. Not something I am used to.
845am – Stop at Jefferies Bay to meet up with the doods from Xcel and Billabong to thank them for the support and collect thicker wetsuits for the colder wate...

| C2C4C Diary - Day 12 |

|
|
445am – Wake to an early alarm. Think for a minute what the hell the alarm was for if we were on a rest day. Realise it was my alarm and not a practical joke for one of the team. Off Jason and drove to J-Bay some hour away for a first light surf.
You might ask why on earth would you wake up if you don’t have to and spend energy on surfing when there is a task at hand of the waverunner expedition.
Well firstly I will go mad sitting in a hotel room for a day. Secondly the rest days are their just as much for mental rest and to get away fr...

7am – All on time this morning leaving the harbour. Haha. Over the previous days admin after a great sleep. Rest does wanders for the mood and state of mind.
9am – First 80km was awesome riding. Smooth! Great to have Karl Kretzman from Kretz Marine with us for the ride. He rode really well to keep up with the quick pace and was cool to have some fresh faces.
930am – Crossed Algoa Bay some way out to sea at stages. Got to get used to it with plenty bay like this in the oos kaap.
1145am – Rob an...
