The 5 Beaches is my favourite race on the Durban Winter scene but the last time it ran its original course was longer than I can remember. I have been doing this a while so that was like a hundred years ago.
The weather finally played ball for ‘Sam’s’ course. What a day. Light offshore breeze with mild south c...
Found this in the paper today. Interview from Decorex a month ago that hit print this morning in the Mercury. Some funny questions about life outside paddling.
King of the Bay is such a unique challenge. Not only is it the only day of the year we get to paddle out of the harbour mouth but the race also has a rather large lap of the Durban bay all the way to the river mouth and back to Marine.
This creates 3 very different sections to the race. Flat in...
I have an awesome opportunity to be involved with Story Sessions no 5 with Thando Thusi. The event off really well thanks to Travis Gale and his team who put together this awesome concept.
I had never been to a story sessions event before so didn’t know what to expect. The vibe is so similar to this blog. I started this blog to tell a story I was passionate about and story sessions is essentially that, simply telling a story that the city of Durban ...
What an epic show by Anthony Grote www.anthonygrote.com via www.gameplanmedia.co.za
I find little things that work for me, everyone does. Waking up for race 2 of the series on Sunday, I was very aware of the little pieces of pre-race routine and how things just seems to be waxed. Still half asleep, knowing just the right amount of Future Life to put in the bowl and savouring the sweet taste of fresh coffee.
I Just walked out of a coffee meeting with Travis Gale the master mind behind Story Sessions. Travis and his team are putting together an epic event on Wednesday with one of the Marine Development paddlers Thando and the team at Marine Surf Lifesaving Club on the success of the intergrated programs we are involved in.
It is a must on the Durban calendar if you want to be inspired. The event is FREE so no ex...
My season kicked off this last weekend with a simple 12km course race at my home club. Training the last month has been some of the most consistent I have had in years so the hope and confidence leading into a long season is on a high for sure.
Although training the last month has been awesome prep for race 1 was less than ideal. I joined a crew doing an expedition the last couple of days and the long miles on the water are gladly banked but n...
While I was racing on Sunday I sadly missed a paddle out down the south coast in memory of the sharks that died in the nets recently.
I love the ocean and every part of being in the water from paddling, surfing to diving. It's great to see so many different ocean users get together to support ocean conservation. Well done to all those in...
The calm seas of day 1 deserted us. What met us paddling through the surf was a sloppy mess left over from a light on shore the night before. The body rest and refuelled the crew headed off in really high spirits.
Took a while to get out through the surf and with the bumpy conditions the crew really had to dig into some reserve tanks to pull off the 45km paddle.
Slow going some 5 hours later we paddled into the small craft harbour in Richards Bay ...
I am sitting in the shade, under a tree, looking over my camp site after a great day 1 (for me) of Nomakanjani.
Nomakanjani 2012 is and awesome expedition put together by some paddlers from Richards Bay. They are raising money to build a learning centre for kids in Richards Bay. A great cause.
So far the crew has mountain biked from the top of Sani Pass to the Tugela River and paddled from Middle Drift to the sea down the might (empty) Tugela.
Had the privilege of attending Jasper and Micaela Mocke’s wedding in the Oos Kaap last week. Even better I got to road trip with my other half Kirsty. Even got in a paddle. Wish most weeks were like this. Full of happiness and laughs with great friends. World class and some epic memories.
